Writing Limerick’sIntroduction: I will be teaching a three-day unit on writing, wed, thurs, fri. I am doing thisas an assignment for my college classes on teaching. At the end on Friday, I will hand outan assessment rubric for you all to fill out on how you thought the lesson went. This will be useful for me as I learn more about myself as a teacher and teaching in general. An overview of the three day unit: Today we’ll review different organizational strategies, or graphic organizers. Then I’ll introduce you to the Limerick, a specific kind of poetry. Thursday will be a day to work on writing the Limerick and on Friday we’ll do what is called writers circle. As our guide, and as a way to review what you are learning in SocialStudies, we’ll use the topic of Rome. Goals, Students will learn about and practice mind mapping and KWL charts as brainstorming tools. Students will then learn about limericks and use the mind map and KWL chart as a tool for writing the limerick. Students will practice peer evaluation/sharing with the limerick and have time for revision and re-writing.Day 1First we are going to work with the KWL chart as a tool for laying out what you know, what you are interested in learning, and a review of what you learned. Raise your hand if you know what the letters K,W,L stand for?Like I mentioned before, we are using today as a brainstorming day on Rome. On this piece of paper, make a three columns and label them K,W, and L Then fill in the K with everything you know, names, places, details, etc. Then fill in specific things you are interested in knowing more about, and leave the L section blank. You’ll have a chance to come back to this column at a later date.Next, to present everyone’s list under the K column, we’ll use the mind map. I will createa mind map on the board and you’ll follow along with your own map. This way every one will come away with lots of information about Rome. The point of this mind map is to collect as many names, places, and information about Rome and Roman civilization to use when you write your limerick. Finally, Limerick presentationEnd with students making a list of fun names and places with as many words as possible that rhyme with them on the back of the mind map page.Start with an individual KWL chart for Rome as a pre-write, students can use their social studies books and other resources to help recall information (10min). Students will save this chart for use later (fill in third column). Then practices mind mapping utilizing the info from individual KWL charts using Elmo, or the white board. Students will follow along by creating own mind map that reflects the whole group brainstorm. The center of the map will be Rome (10min). Finally, introduce limerick using a PowerPoint presentation from the wikipedia limerick page. I'll finish by having students make a list ofnames, images, and ideas for tomorrow.Day 2 Raise your hand if you think you can describe the different elements of a Limerick. Come up with a student generated list of the elements of a limerick for a review, then give time to write. Re-introduces Limerick’s, then have students look again at their mind map, KWL chart and list from Wed. to pick out ideas of images, or phrases they liked and begin writing. The rest of class will be spent writing limericks. Remind students to use thesaurus, dictionary and SS book.Day 3 writers circle: Groups of 3-4, one at a time each student will read his/her poem to the group, and the group will listen to response in 3 ways. 1. Briefly summarize “what I heard you say” 2. Note a word or phrase that you liked or appreciated 3. Ask any questions about writing, or poem, or any confusion.
