Kunte [email protected] Course Description: The study of structure and function in plants and animals. Topics to be covered include structure at the level of the cell, tissue, organ and individual growth, transport/circulation/gas exchange, nutrition, reproduction, development, endocrinology, and animal neural regulation. The laboratory will examine plant and animal structure and function with observational and experimental approaches. Prerequisite: BIOL 1441. Textbooks: Symbiosis: Structure and Function of Organisms Biology Laboratory, Biology 1442 for The University of Texas Arlington. 2005. Boston, Massachusetts: Pearson, Benjamin Cummings. 120p. Campbell and Reece. Grading: 1442 is a four‐credit class that includes a lecture and a laboratory. For grading purposes, the lecture comprises 2/3 of your grade while other 1/3 is your lab grade. Therefore, you can multiply your final lecture grade by 0.66 and your lab grade by 0.33 and add them together to get your complete class grade. Your laboratory grade will be determined as follows. All exams are written in such a way that that can be answered on a scantron. For each exam, bring a scantron 882‐E and a #2 pencil. Erase at your own risk. Grades on exams will not be changed due to an erasure. Lab Grade Breakdown: Assignment Points (200 Total) Due Date 8 quizzes (5 points each) 40 Taken at the beginning of each lab unless otherwise noted by your instructor. (You must be on time to take a quiz) 4 Web Exercises (10 points each) 40 The beginning of class the week after assigned Lab Report 40 03 (002)‐ 04 (003) August Midterm Exam 40 22 (002)‐23 (003) July Lab Final Exam 40 05 (002)‐06 (003) August THERE WILL BE NO EXTRA CREDIT, SO DO NOT ASK. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. There will be no make‐up quizzes and you must be present to gather the data for lab reports. A report that contains data gathered in your absence will be considered cheating and you will not receive credit for that assignment. Extreme circumstances will be considered on a case‐by‐case basis. Lab Reports: The lab report is worth 40 points. Your GTA will go over the expectations/guidelines for lab reports several times during the semester and the guide for writing a lab report is posted on the Introductory Laboratories website. A LATE REPORT WILL NOT BE GRADED. Drop for non-payment of tuition: Payment must be received by the term due date of July 2, 2009 or your registration will be cancelled and your seat will be released. If your registration is cancelled for non-payment, you may re-register for classes only if seats are available.
