Revised 11-11-11DEPARTMENT: Early Childhood and Elementary EducationCOURSE PREFIX: REA COURSE NUMBER: 306 CREDIT HOURS: 3I. TITLE: Teaching Reading in Elementary P-5II. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND PREREQUISITES: An introduction to content and teaching methodology in reading. Topics include reading process, motivating readers, literacy development, word recognition, and comprehension. Field experiences required. Prerequisite: EDU 303.III. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Class activities will be centered on the attainment of the course objectives listed below. These objectives are understood to be reflective of, but not limited to those behaviors aligned with the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA), Kentucky Core Academic Standards (KCAS), the Characteristics of Highly Effective Teaching and Learning (CHETL), and Assessment Literacy. Following each objective, and enclosed in parentheses, are numbers that reference the Kentucky Teacher Standards for Preparation and Certification (KTS), International Reading Association (IRA) Standards for Literacy Professionals, and National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Standards addressed by that objective. Upon successful completion of this class, students will be able to A. design, plan and implement instruction that addresses Kentucky initiatives (KTS 2,4/ IRA 2,3); B. describe the reading process, including the cueing systems of written language (KTS 7/IRA 1/NCTE 3); C. demonstrate an understanding of literacy development in children (KTS 7/IRA 1);D. describe how comprehension takes place; list factors that affect comprehension and describe and implement strategies for helping students comprehend (KTS 4,7/IRA 1, 2 /NCTE 3);E. describe and implement a variety of strategies for word identification to increase reading vocabulary (KTS 4,7/IRA 1, 2 /NCTE 3);F. describe and implement a variety of strategies for motivating students to read (KTS 3/IRA 1,2/ NCTE 1, 12);G. describe a variety of instructional approaches and design/plan for literacy instruction (KTS 1,2,7/IRA 2,3,4,5);H. apply knowledge of reading/language learning to provide instruction successfully in a field-based language arts classroom with a qualified teacher (KTS 1, 2, 3, 4/IRA 1-6);I. reflect on their teaching and ways to improve instruction to better meet the needs of diverse students (KTS 7/IRA 2,3,4,6); andJ. explain how students with special learning needs and/or special language or cultural needs may be included in the literacy learning environment and experience success (KTS 2,3,4/IRA 2,5).Revised 11-11-11IV. FIELD, CLINICAL, AND/OR LABORATORY EXPERIENCES: Students will participate in six field experience sessions in an elementary school setting. Failure to complete any aspect of the field experiences will result in an incomplete or failing grade in the course.VII. TEXT(S) AND RESOURCES: Tompkins, Gail E. (2010). Literacy for the 21st Century. 5th Ed. Pearson Merrill Prentice Hall.VIII. EVALUATION AND GRADING PROCEDURES: Grades will be awarded for performance on course activities including but not limited to class assignments, instructional presentations, field experiences, and examinations. The Read Aloud Brochure assignment serves as this course’s designated artifact. IX. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are expected to adhere to the MSU Attendance Policy outlined in the current MSU Bulletins.X. ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY: Cheating, plagiarism (submitting another person’s material as one’s own), or doing work for another person which will receive academic credit are all impermissible. This includesthe use of unauthorized books, notebooks, or other sources in order to secure or give help during an examination; the unauthorized copying of examinations, assignments, reports,Revised 11-11-11or term papers; or the presentation of unacknowledged material as if it were the student’s own work. Disciplinary action may be taken beyond the academic discipline administeredby the faculty member who teaches the course in which the cheating took place. Note: Faculty reserve the right to invalidate any examinations or other evaluative measures if substantial evidence exists that the integrity of the examination has been compromised. XI. FLAG SYSTEM/CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT: Student progress is continuously assessed throughout the teacher preparation program. Appropriate professional characteristics and dispositions, in addition to academic achievement, are assessed. Positive and negative flags are submitted by faculty to Teacher Education Services and then presented to admissions committees. Negative flagsare carefully reviewed to make a determination as to whether a student should be denied admission OR if a professional development plan will be designed for the student’s progress towards program completion.
