History 1301, History of the United States to 1876 Summer I, 2011 Instructor: Dr. Randy Rowan Office Hours: Reese , by appointment. Office: AD 127, Phone: 894-9611, ext. 2459, e mail: [email protected] Textbook: America Past and Present, Vol.I, 9th ed., Divine …etc. Objectives and Format: The course seeks to familiarize the student with the basic events and interpretations of American history to 1876. It will also assist students in the development of skills in such areas as note taking, study habits, research and oral and written communication. Student resources include: lectures, class discussions and the basic textbook. Lectures will often contain material not available in the other sources. The exams, however, will include questions drawn from both class lectures and the textbook. Reading assignments will be announced in class. This is a reading intensive course. Grade: The course grade will be based on three major exams. The first will be worth 30%, the second 30% and the third (final) 40%. There will be no extra credit. Exam Schedule: Exam I – June 9 Exam II – June 21 Final -- June 30 Additional Information: This is a college level class and students will be expected to conduct themselves as responsible adults. Disruptive behavior (talking, cell phones, sleeping, working on material for other classes, etc.) will not be tolerated. ( Cell phones must be turned off when you enter class and be placed out of sight. You may not leave class to answer a cell phone. Students who violate these rules may be dropped from the class.) You are encouraged to ask for help it you have questions or problems. Questions are also welcomed in class. All students are responsible for the material presented in class (reading assignments, directions and subject matter). If you miss a class it is your responsibility to make up what you missed. Class attendance is very important and students will be expected to be on time. The following attendance policy will be followed. MTWT classes -- after three absences the student may be dropped. Students dropped for excessive absences who have a failing grade will be dropped with an F. Note: If you decide to stop attending class it is your responsibility to drop. Make - Up Exams: If you miss an exam it is your responsibility to make arrangements for a make-up. These will be given at the instructor’s discretion. Make-up exams consist of identification and essay questions.
