College Readiness & Mathematics Division Fall/2011 MATH 1314: COLLEGE ALGEBRA, 4003, 3 Credit Hours INSTRUCTOR: Mark Young CLASS SCHEDULE: C323 MWF 10:10 AM until 11:05 AM INSTRUCTOR CONTACT INFORMATION OFFICE: C-201 OFFICE HOURS: By appointment TELEPHONE: (972) 860-7108 or 1046 EMAIL ADDRESS: [email protected] CATALOG: Prerequisite: Two years of high school algebra and an appropriate assessment score or Developmental Mathematics 0099 or Development Mathematics 0093. This course is a study of relations and functions including polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and special functions. Other topics include complex numbers, systems of equations and inequalities, theory of equations, progressions, the binomial theorem, proofs, and applications. TEXTBOOK: College Algebra, Blitzer, Pearson (5th Edition), 2010 ISBN: 032-1-666-100 and MyMathLab Access Code. CALCULATOR: As of Spring 2010, a graphing calculator is required for all College Algebra Courses. You may choose your own graphing calculator model; however, TI 83 or TI 84 version is preferred. Graphing Calculators may not be allowed during some examinations. GRADING POLICY: The semester grade will be determined by four items: - Homework (MyMathLab) 20% - Quizzes (MyMathLab) 10% - In-Class Exams (Paper/Pencil) 45% - Final Exam (Paper/Pencil) 25%Your homework and quizzes will consist of on-line assignments for each section using MyMathLab. There will be four paper and pencil in-class exams and one final exam. See Course Schedule for details. GRADING RATIONALE: Average * Letter Grade * Rounded to nearest whole number. 90 – 100 A 80 – 89 B 70 – 79 C 60 – 69 D 59 or below F FINAL EXAMINATION: A comprehensive, departmental final examination, which will represent 25% of the class grade, will be administered in all College Algebra classes. POLICY ON MISSED TESTS AND ASSIGNMENTS: No late homework or quiz assignments will be accepted. No make-up exams will be given. If you know in advance that you will miss an exam, please make arrangements with me to complete the exam early otherwise you will receive a zero as an exam grade. No exam grade will be dropped. Formula cards will not be allowed during exams. If it will improve your average, the final exam will replace your lowest in-class exam score. GRADE REPORT: Grade reports are no longer mailed. Convenient access is available online. Just use your student identification number when you log onto e-Connect at http://econnect.dcccd.edu/. DROP DATE: Last date to drop with a grade of “W” is November 17. ATTENDANCE POLICY: You are expected to regularly attend all classes in which you are enrolled. Students have the responsibility to attend class and to consult with the instructor when an absence occurs. A sign-in sheet will be available at the start of each class to record your presence. Arriving more than 10 minutes late to class will be considered an absence. If a student is unable to complete a course (or courses) in which he/she is registered, it is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the course by the appropriate date. (The date is published in the academic calendar each year and in each semester’s class schedule). If a student does not withdraw, he/she will receive a performance grade, usually a grade of “F”. Students who are absent from class for the observance of a religious holiday may take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence if, not later than the 15th day of the semester, the student notified the instructor(s) that the student would be absent for a religious holiday. Sec. 51.911 TX Educ. Code. DROP POLICY: To drop a class or withdraw from the college, students must follow the prescribed procedure. It is the student’s responsibility to drop or withdraw. Failure to do so will result in receiving a performance grade, usually grade of “F”. No drop or withdrawal requestsare accepted by telephone. Students who drop a class or withdraw from the College before the semester deadline receive a “W” (Withdraw) in each class dropped. The deadline for receiving a “W” is indicated on the academic calendar and the current class schedule. If you are unable to complete this course, you must withdraw from it by November 17. STOP BEFORE YOU DROP SIX DROP RULE: For students who enrolled in college level courses for the first time in the fall of 2007, Texas Education Code 51.907 limits the number of courses a student may drop. You may drop no more than 6 courses during your entire undergraduate career, unless the drop qualifies as an exception. Your campus counseling/advising center will give you more information on the allowable exceptions. Remember that once you have accumulated 6 non-exempt drops you cannot drop any other courses with a “W”. Therefore, please exercise caution when dropping courses in any Texas public institution of higher learning, including all seven of the Dallas County Community Colleges. INCOMPLETES An incomplete grade of “I” may be given when an unforeseen emergency prevents you from completing the work in a course. The “I” must be converted to a performance grade (A-F) within 90 days after the first day of classes in the subsequent regular semester. If the work is not completed after 90 days, the “I” is converted to a performance grade, usually an “F”. An Incomplete Contract is used to assign an incomplete grade and states the requirements for the satisfactory completion of the course. The Incomplete Contract must be agreed upon and signed by the Instructor, the student, and the division dean and submitted with the final grade report. When an Incomplete Contract must be submitted without your signature, the instructor must include a statement indicating that you are aware of and agree with the contract. FINANCIAL AID: If you are
