Announcements• Program 3 due Tuesday Nov 13• Homework 2 out today, due Mon Nov 19• Today: Discuss course project expectations and ideasPlug for Data Mining Course• Next semester I’ll teach a course in Data Mining– Tue – Thur, 5:30-6:45• This (like databases) is a U/G course• Currently Data Mining is a special topics course but will be “regular” course soon– You can use it for technical elective• Focus is on data mining algorithms• Prereqs: programming (351), calculus– statistics / probabilities not required, but be prepared to learnRevised Grading Breakdown• We are not going to have as many programs and homework grade as I anticipated– We’ll have 3 HWs + 3 programs– Thus the % of total grade made up by HWs and programs will drop• Old breakdown: HW 20% programs 20% project 10% midterm 20% final 30% • New breakdown: 5 best HW and progs 7% each, project 15%, midterm 20%, final 20%Project Overview• Course project is to be done in groups of 2-4– Each person must contribute– Final report describes roles of each member– Grade will not necessarily be the same member.• Involves learning, implementing and describing• Project ideas on the web (we’ll go over them today)Course Project Milestones• Tue Nov 13 (in class)– Each person turn in piece of paper with:•Your name• Your group’s name• List of the members of your group• Very brief (one or two sentence) description of project topic• Thur Nov 15 (in class)– I will give you recommended readings and other resources• Tue Dec 4– Progress report due (more on this later)• Dec 13 - Dec 20– Schedule demo w/ me– Turn in report and code at the
