Elementary Algebra Test 12 Questions 214 Test Items in Pool In the Elementary Algebra test, 12 questions drawn from three broad categories, each of which is further divided into more specific topics. The first category, operations with integers and rationals, includes • computing with integers, • computing with negative rationals, • ordering, and • working with absolute values. This category provides questions appropriate for those with very minimal skills, and accounts for three to four questions for those who are moderately competent in elementary algebra. The second category, operations with algebraic expressions, includes several topics appropriate only for the least skilled including • evaluating simple formulas and expressions, • adding and subtracting monomials and polynomials. Other topics are administered to students across all levels of performance. These include • multiplying and dividing monomials and polynomials, • evaluating positive rational roots and exponents, • factoring, and • simplifying algebraic fractions. Students scoring near the low end of the scale receive six or seven questions drawn from these topics, while those near the top of the scale receive five. The third category, solution of equations, inequalities, and word problems, includes • solving linear equations, • solving quadratic equations by factoring, • translating written phrases into algebraic expressions, • solving verbal problems in an algebraic context including geometric reasoning, and • graphing. Most such problems are too difficult to yield useful information for examinees with minimal skills; hence, such students receive only one or two of them. These problems provide the most discriminating questions for examinees who are more competent in elementary algebra.Proficiency Statements and Recommended Placements for Elementary Algebra Test Scores of less than 28 (<20th Percentile) Students should take the Arithmetic Test before any placement decisions are finalized. Scores of 28 to 43 (20th - 50th Percentile) Student has a sense • of order relationships, • the relative size of signed numbers. Recommended Placement: Pre-algebra Scores of 44 to 81 (50th - 80th Percentile) Students can • perform operations with signed numbers, • perform operations with algebraic expressions, • combine like terms, • multiply binomials, • identify common factors. Recommended Placement: Elementary algebra Scores of 82 to 108 (80th - 90th Percentile) Students can • simplify algebraic expressions, • add radicals and algebraic functions, • factor quadratic expression in standard form, • factor the difference of square binomials, • evaluate algebraic expressions, • solve linear equations with integer coefficients. Recommended Placement: Intermediate Algebra Scores of 109 to 120 (90th - 100th Percentile) Students can • factor quadratic expressions, • factor the difference of two squares and square binomials, • evaluate algebraic expressions, • solve linear equations with integer coefficients. Recommended Placement: It is suggested that students who score at this level take the College Level Math Test before placement decision is
