1OPIM 5110 OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT Fall 2009 Instructor: Jose Cruz, Ph.D. Office: Room 332 Phone: (413) 210-6241 Office Hrs: by appointment Fax: (860) 486-4839 e-mail: [email protected] Course Description: Operations Management deals with the management of the transformation of inputs (labor, materials, information, etc.) into outputs (goods and services). This course provides an analytical framework for making operations management decisions regarding capacity management, inventory management, planning of operations, project management, quality control, etc. Case studies discussed offer an opportunity to use the quantitative tools and qualitative knowledge learned in lectures and readings. Cases and Text: Harvard/Stanford Business School cases. There is no text for this course. For reference purposes any recent edition of a standard OM text will suffice, e.g., Russell & Taylor, Stevenson, Krajewski & Ritzman. Cases and Notes: A case package including two Harvard/Stanford Business School cases is available for purchase from the instructor. In addition, I will hand out a copy of the Class Notes for the class. The cost per student for cases and the notes is $ 30. Pay by check or money order made out to UCONN. Grading: 2 Exams (non-cumulative): 70% Team case write-ups: 30% Exams: The two exams will consist of primarily problem formulation and solution, similar to assigned homework problems. There will be multiple-choice theory questions as well. Materials on the web: From time to time I may leave files on the web for you to download. These can be found at http: http://users.business.uconn.edu/jcruz/opim5110.html Homework: Homework is assigned but not collected. Solutions will be posted on the website for the course. Using a spreadsheet package like Excel is encouraged, where applicable, for homework. Cases: The class will be split into groups. Each group will be expected to turn in a 3-5 page report on each of the 4 HBS/SBS cases discussed in class, on the day of the case discussion. Suggested questions are on the web site. Please contribute fully to team discussions on cases. There will be a peer-evaluation at the end of the semester for team member contribution to case discussions and write-ups. Excel Installation: If you are using a laptop, or to do the work at a desktop computer, please ensure that Solver and Data Analysis Tool Pak add-ins are installed. To do this, go to \Tools\Add-Ins and check the boxes for these add-ins.
