Forty-five hours of classroom participation. Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment in ELE3290, ELE3340, and ELE4880, or permission of department chair. Course Purpose: The goal of this course is to provide prospective teachers with experiential support for planning and teaching social studies, science, and reading to children of various academicability and ethnicity. Course Rationale: This course is an integral part of the courses with which it is associated, in under the direct supervision of the university instructor, and is in partial fulfillment of the pre-student teaching division practicum mandated by the Illinois State Teacher Certification Board. Foster students' desire for lifelong learning, and model one's own desire for lifelong learning, including self-evaluation. 2. Demonstrate effective communication skills. 3. Strive for positive development of students' intellectual, social, and moral skills and behaviors. 4. Design instruction that will develop and utilize the cognitive processes by which pupilslearn. 5. Demonstrate knowledge of facts and an understanding of fundamental principles, ideas, and relationships among various knowledge domains. 6. Demonstrate knowledge of past and present developments, issues, research, and social influences in the field of education. Outcomes Specific to ELE4000: 1. Develop, implement, and evaluate successful curriculum in the practicum setting. 2. Communicate and cooperate with the host teacher in the practicum setting. 3. Provide for the uniqueness of individuals, recognizing the characteristics of those who are culturally diverse and those who are at-risk, fostering appreciation for individual differences. 4. Manage the classroom to optimize academically and socially engaged time. 5. Help to positively enhance students' intellectual, social and moral behaviors. 6. Perform successfully within the social and political contexts of the school and community. 7. Model appropriate professional behaviors. 8. Promote healthy self-concepts for students. 9. Demonstrate alternative methods of achieving similar learning outcomes. 10. Make meaningful curriculum decisions regarding what to teach and how to teach (implied in the above). 11. Emphasize higher order and critical thinking by promoting a problem-solving environment. 10. Use basic concepts of measurement and assessment in instructional decision making. Reid- self-evaluation- record keeping (completed logs - re-setting professional goals Practicum Procedures:1. Contact your cooperating teacher in advance. Arrange to meet your cooperating teacher prior to the first day of practicum, if desired by the classroom teacher.2. Request school and classroom guidelines for professional and student behavior (e.g. no gum, no hats, quiet when in the halls). Request a class list and a class schedule. Make a seating chart to familiarize yourself with students’ names.3. Know the school calendar and floor plan of the building.4. Express your wish to teach as much as possible after the initial orientation to the classroom. Schedule your teaching periods with your cooperating teacher.5. Use ALL time on-site for instructional and/or professional purposes, even if the children are out of the classroom.6. Plan ahead. Over plan. Plan off-site, on your own time, in advance. Save complete records and writing of your plans for the Practicum Notebook. You should have a lesson plan every time you teach. Even if you teach an unplanned lesson you should prepare a lesson plan of what you did OR what you would havedone if you had had time to plan. If you must be absent, be sure to
