Emphasis is placed on communication skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and cultural understanding (behaviors, institutions, perspectives and artistic manifestations). Espinasse / www.french-word-a-day.com)Course Objectives:By the end of the semester, the student will:Be familiar with the syntactical structure of the French language.Be able to recognize the spoken word in French and understand it when expressed in simple sentences or phrases.Be aware of the nature and importance of articulating sounds to speak in French.Be able to comprehend the written word in French and interpret its meaning, at the elementary level.Be familiar with various aspects of French and Francophone culture.Responsibilities/Obligations of the Student:Attendance at all class sessions is crucial to success in foreign language study. Prompt arrival to class, prompt return from breaks and attendance for the duration of the class period is expected.Complete all assignments, including homework, workbook/lab manual, presentations, etc.Take all unit exams, in-class dictations (les dictÈes) and the final exam.Course Content:Aural (listening) comprehension.Pronunciation.Reading and vocabulary study.Primary elementary grammatical structures.Major idiomatic expressions.Important aspects of French culture.Please TURN OFF ALL CELL PHONES & PAGERS while in the classroom.EATING or DRINKING is NOT PERMITTED in the classroom.Method of Evaluation:The instructor reserves the right to adjust the course to meet the needs of the class.30% Unit exams (lowest unit exam grade will be dropped). NO MAKE-UP TESTS !20% Comprehensive final examination (MUST be taken to pass the course).20% Dictations and Workbook/lab manual20% Oral presentation.10% Class participation (correlates directly with absences & tardies)-------100% NO MAKE-UP TESTS !Last day to drop course without a ìWî is 2-9-07.
