We study cal-culus because it provides a useful language and a powerful toolkit for describing and modeling theworld around us. This course will develop practical problem solving skills, enhanced by intuitive ge-ometric understanding. Its main topics include limits, continuity, derivatives, maxima and minima, trigonometric, logarithmic and exponential functions, integration, calculating areas and volumes, andtechniques of integration.3 PrerequisitesThe prerequisite is a score of at least 80 on the ALEKS placement exam. If you have not achieved thisscore, you will be dropped from the class by the registrar. Please check that you are still enrolled inthe class on wednesday of the second week. If not, there may be a problem with your ALEKS test.4 Trial Placement ExamWe are developing a new (hopefully better) placement exam. You will receive an email asking you totake this exam on Quest between 12 noon Friday 8/26 and 10am Monday 8/29. Please participateM408C Fall 2011 2and try your best. Those scoring in the top 25% will receive 2% extra credit added to your final grade. Those scoring in the middle 50% will receive 1% extra credit. Those scoring in the bottom 25%,including those who don’t take the exam, will not receive any extra credit. No one will be penalizedfor doing poorly.5 GradingYour grade will be determined by homework, online quizzes, two midterm exams, and a final exam. The midterm exams will be held during lecture.Assignment Date Value1. Homework due Mondays and Wednesdays 15%2. Midterm Exam I September 29 25%3. Midterm Exam II October 27 25%4. Final Exam December 10 35%5. Trial Placement Exam August 26 - August 29 2% E.C.6 HomeworkThough it is worth only 15% of your final grade, doing homework is essential for learning this material(or any mathematics really). Assignments will be posted each Thursday (or before) on the coursewebsite http://ma.utexas.edu/users/jdanciger/fall2011/m408c.html. There will be two homeworkassignments per week, a short online assignment, and a written assignment.6.1 Online homework (Quest) - 5% of total gradeOnline assignments, which will be reasonably short, must be accessed and submitted through Quest. You may access the Quest system at https://quest.cns.utexas.edu. There will be a $22 fee for useof Quest during the semester. Most of the questions will be multiple choice. I strongly recommendprinting out or copying down the questions and working them on a sheet of paper before enteringyour answers. If you enter an incorrect answer, you may try again. Your final score will be determinedby how many tries it takes for you to find the correct answer. The main purpose of the online portionof the assignment is to give you some quick practice with instant feedback from the online system.Think of this as a warm-up for the written assignment. The online portion of the assignment must becompleted on Quest by Monday at 5:00pm (with the exception of the first one, due on wednesday). Thesolutions will be released at 5:01pm. If possible, it is a good idea to look at the solutions and try tounderstand your mistakes before coming to lecture on Tuesday. There will be online homework everyweek, even in the week of an exam.6.2 Written homework - 10% of total gradeThe written assignments are intended to help you develop your skills of mathematical explanation. Asyou proceed further in mathematics/science, writing will become more and more important. Pleaseattempt to explain your solutions clearly and thoroughly (with words). Please do not turn in un-intelligible scratch work with an answer circled in the middle of the page. Turn in written assignmentsto the TA at the beginning of discussion section on Wednesday. It will be graded for both correctness andclarity, with partial credit possible. You may write these assignments by hand or type them. There willnot be a written assignment due during the week of an exam.M408C Fall 2011 3CollaborationYou are encouraged to study the material with your classmates. Sometimes the best way to learn thematerial is to struggle through it with someone else. You may work on the homework assignments withclassmates. However, you must write your solutions yourself. It is considered cheating to copy anotherstudent’s work. You must also list the names of all classmates you collaborated with. You will not bepenalized for working together, but it is common courtesy to acknowledge your collaborators (mostof your professors write joint research articles all the time, just look at their webpages). The headingof each written assignment should contain your name, your student ID number, your section time andunique number, and the names of your collaborators. For the online assignments, you must personallyenter your own answers into quest. It is considered cheating for another person to enter answers intoyour Quest account.Late Homework?Late homework will not be accepted. We will drop your two lowest online homework scores as wellas your two lowest written homework scores. So if you miss an assignment, you will receive zero, butthat score will be dropped. Just don’t miss more than two assignments!7 ExamsTwo midterm exams will occur during class time on Thursday, September 29 and Thursday, November3. The final exam will be Saturday, December 10, 2:00-5:00pm. The final will be cumulative, but willfocus more on the material after the second midterm. No calculators or note sheets will
