Field based activities will be provided in conjunction with ELE 3000.Prerequisites: Junior standing (60 sem. hrs.). Concurrent enrollment with ELE 3280 and ELE 3000 is recommended or permission of department chair.Purpose of the Course: This course allows prospective teachers the opportunity to read and utilize the current research and teaching techniques expected of a competent teacher. By blocking this course with Developmental Reading and Instructional Strategies, college students will correlate the college class work with the public school participation. The language arts section of the Illinois Certification Test, mandatedby the Illinois Certification Testing System, is to prepare teachers who will teach language arts in a manner that will attain the "Model Learning Objectives in Language Arts" also mandated by the State of Illinois. Outcomes for All ELE Classes:1.0 Demonstrate a knowledge of facts, and an understanding of fundamental principles, ideas, andrelationships among various knowledge domains.2.0 Develop a desire of lifelong learning in students and personally display one's own desire for lifelong learning, including self-evaluation skills.3.0 Demonstrate good communication skills. Design instruction to develop and utilize the cognitiveprocesses by which pupils learn.4.0 Design instruction to promote a healthy self-concept in their students.5.0 Demonstrate knowledge of past and present developments, issues, research, and social influences field of education.6.0 Demonstrate/exhibit sensitivity to students’ feelings.Outcomes Specific to the Course:7.0 Understand language acquisition and development.8.0 Develop a knowledge of the basic writing skills.9.0 Identify listening and speaking skills.10.0 Identify appropriate instructional techniques in a multicultural setting.11.0 Design instruction to develop and utilize the cognitive and affective processes by which pupils learn.12.0 Decide what will be learned and ways to achieve it.Course Text:1. Tompkins, Gail E. (2005). Language Arts: Patterns of Practice. 6th ed. New Jersey, Prentice Hall, Inc.2. A handout packet must be purchased at Copy Express in the student union.3. Live Text is required for this class. You will be asked to use it to prepare some of your assignments and to submit them to the university through your Live Text portfolio. Course Outline:Topic I - Language Development – Chapters 1, 7, 8Lectures and classroom discussion will center around the functions of language, the development of language skills through the early years and school years, evaluating language, and the challenges of the diverse languages and cultures that make up today's classroom. Topic II – Listening – Chapter 3 Attention will be given to the levels of listening , the factors that affect listening, and teaching methods addressing listening skills. A review of the research will also be included.Topic III - Oral Communication – Chapter 4We will discuss the development of oral language and the factors that affect speaking abilities. Classroom activities that promote oral language development will be analyzed.. Topic IV - Written Expression – Chapters 5, 6, 10, 11, 12Attention will be given to the development of writing skills and their relationship to reading skills. We will examine traditional vs. process writing, writing strategies for both creative and functional writing, and writing across the curriculum.Topic V - Literature – Chapter 9Discussion will be devoted to the use of literature in the curriculum, children's interests, guiding children's reading selections, and motivating children's use of literature.Topic VI - The Language Arts Programs – Chapters 2, 13, 14The integrated language arts program will be examined including teacher resources, classroom organization, textbooks and supplementary materials, use of electronic technology, and program evaluation.Requirements Points SpecificsAttendance and ACTIVEparticipation15- Mandatory attendance and participation at all sessions Notify professor if absentThematic Unit 25- A teaching unit prepared to be used in a classroom designed on a selected theme and incorporating multiple lesson plans and content areas Learning Activity 10- Presentation of a creative idea or strategy for teaching in the classroom Personal Writings 20- Two written presentations using the recommended strategies (10 pts. each)Journal Abstract Mini Lesson Midterm/Final1020100- An abstract of a research article that pertains to the teaching of language arts (10 pts.)- Preparing a creative language arts mini lesson and presenting the lesson in class- Score based on percent correct as indication of knowledge and understanding of assigned readings, handouts, films, and class experiences (50 pts. each)Total 200Grading:All students are expected to complete readings and assignments in a timely fashion so that they can participate in class discussions and experiences. Attendance is expected, as a basic premise of professional educators is that attendance and participation are extremely important to educational progress. Excessive absence is cause for failure in this class. Up to two absences will be allowed without penalty. Five points will be deducted for each absence from class after the first two. Due dates will be set for all work, and grades on all assignments will be lowered two points per day after the due date. No workwill be accepted after the study day designated for finals.Assignments are judged on the quality of the content, presentation (clearly written with no mechanical errors), organization, and use of references to support ideas. Students are expected to turn in only originalwork. Any work that is derived from published sources must include appropriate credit citations. The
