Essays In preparing for the essay portion of the exam you should consider: · the historical forces leading to the end of the Cold War; · the role of nuclear weapons as focal points of East-West confrontation and inter-alliance affairs; · the evolution of “containment” over space and time; · the rise and fall of “détente”; · the promotion of “human rights” as a U.S. foreign policy objective; · the nature of Wilsonianism and its relevance for U.S. foreign policy throughout the period in question; · morality as an element in U.S. foreign policy; · examples of continuity and change in the practice of U.S. foreign relations; and · the effect of domestic politics on U.S. foreign policy. N.B.: As with the previous exams, this guide is intended to aid you in your studying. It is not meant to be inclusive of all the terms, events, individuals, and ideas mentioned in class or in the texts.
