These hours are in addition to the 40+ hours that you will spend in this class. Failure to complete this project will lead to a failing grade for this course regardless of grades received on other classroom assignments and projects. If you feel that you cannot meet this requirement, you may want to elect to take this course at some other time. Observations Students enrolled in EDU 221 should select a public school, elementary or a secondary school. Other types of schools may be selected with prior approval from your instructor. Since GCC does not currently assign students to schools, the instructor can assist you with this assignment. Many students elect to choose schools they had attended and choose former teachers as their host teacher(s). We encourage you to follow the procedures as noted in this document when selecting and contacting schools. Contacting cooperating schools: Students in EDU 221 are expected to model the behavior of a teacher when selecting a school for the field experience. Students should contact the school secretary by telephone, stating who you are and the purpose of the call. The secretary will inform you how best to proceed in your search for a host teacher. Some students will go directly to the teachers with whom they are familiar, however you must go through the school principal’s office, even though a teacher may have said “yes” to your request to observe in his/her classroom. It is a requirement, a courtesy to the school and a SAFETY concern, to seek the approval of the school principal. Most school principals are pleased to accommodate GCC students but prior approval is essential. ! Since most students are unable to set aside full days for the observations, please provide the teacher with the dates, days and time that you will be available to visit the classroom. These times should meet with the approval of the school. Please keep to this schedule. If you are unable to attend as scheduled, please let the teacher know prior to the time that you are expected at the school. You are a representative of GCC. ! If you are not comfortable with or satisfied with the school or the classroom that you have selected, please do not simply stop attending. Please notify your GCC instructor, who will be willing to assist you.! Please provide your GCC instructor with the name, complete street address, zip code, area code and telephone number of the school where you will be doing your observations. The address should be precise and complete. Please include grade level(s) and subject areas being observed. This information should be provided by the second week of class. ! Please arrange an interview with the host teacher prior to the end of the observations. Among the questions to be asked are: his/her motivations for becoming a teacher, and whether or not teaching would be the chosen career for profession if a career choice had to be made again. Do spend some time planning this interview and be certain to provide the teacher with a copy of the interview questions in advance of the interview date. A copy of the interview questions should be discussed with your GCC instructor prior to giving them to the host teacher. A copy should be included in the log (see below) along with a summary of the teacher’s responses. ! You are required to keep a journal of daily activities. Please purchase a separate composition book for this activity. Routine daily activities should not be included. Please record any unique programs, events and activities. Your comments and statements should be thoughtful and insightful. They should be impressions of the classroom activities observed. The journal is a diary and should be written as such, and will include any reflections that you may have, but should be focused on student behaviors. The journal will be submitted to the instructor for review. The journal will be submitted in primary form, that is, it should not be typed, but should be dated, organized and legible. A time sheet will be used to log and validate the 30 hours. ! Each student will prepare and submit a 2 page typewritten report and will make a brief oral presentation to the class regarding his/her field experience. ! As a reminder, during your field experience activity, attendance is required as scheduled with your host school. Should an emergency occur such that you are unable to appear at the school, please notify the school immediately. You will need to arrange to make up the hours. 2. Chapter Presentations: The class will be divided into groups or teams. Each group will be responsible for presenting and leading the discussion of at least one chapter in the textbook. The team or group will develop a list of five questions and 5 vocabulary words. They will include the page number where the answers can be found. This information will be used as a study guide for your class. The study guide should be provided to the class prior to the presentation. The instructor’s input will expand the discussion with information from various other sources and experiences. The exams will be generated from these questions and the vocabulary. Suggestions " Chapters in your textbook are outlined in the Table of Contents." Scan the Table of Contents to review your chapter(s) and the information that it contains. " Ask yourself questions about the contents as outlined. These questions could become the focus questions that you are to prepare. Other questions may surface as you begin to read the chapter. " Read the chapter, with the focus questions in mind. " Outline and point out the key concepts and important points in the chapter. " The group is to create a pool of 5 questions from which test questions will be generated. " Be creative and complete your work with an exercise (of your choice) that will assist students to understand or enhance the chapter content. Scoring: Scale: 5 – Outstanding: All group members participated, contributed and were familiar with topic(s) and/ or chapter
