Course Outline for Medical Assisting 75Course Content:Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:Chabot College Fall 2010Course Outline for Medical Assisting 75ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATIONS FOR THE MEDICAL ASSISTANTCatalog Description:75 - Administration of Medications for the Medical Assistant 3 unitsMedication administration including study of medications, drug research, drug therapy, immunizations and skin tests. Safe preparation, administration, and documentation of medication given by oral, sublingual, inhalation, topical, vaginal, rectal, transdermal, intramuscular, subcutaneous and intradermal routes. Corequisite: Medical Assisting 70A and Medical Assisting 71A. 2 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory[Typical contact hours: lecture 35, laboratory 52.5]Prerequisite Skills:NoneExpected Outcomes for Students:Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Prepare proper dosages of medication for administration2. Verify ordered doses/dosages prior to administration3. Select proper sites for administering parenteral medication4. Administer oral medications5. Administer parenteral (excluding IV) medications6. Evaluate the work environment to identify safe vs. unsafe working conditions7. Demonstrate knowledge of basic math8. Identify measurement systems9. Define basic units of measurement metric, apothecary and house hold10. Convert among measurement systems11. Identify both abbreviations and symbols used in calculating medication doses12. explain the differences between administering, prescribing and dispensing medication13. classify drugs according to the action they have on the body14. List and define the three names given to medications15. list four factors that affect the action of drugs in the body16. identify adverse reactions that may be observed after administering medication;17. describe the Federal Foods, Drug and Cosmetic Act and the Controlled Substance Act of 1970;18. explain the role of the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA);19. name five controlled substance schedules, the type of medication found in each schedule and describe appropriate storage, prescribing and record keeping of controlled substances;20. recognize the patient who may show signs of drug misuse, drug abuse and drug dependence;21. use drug references to find the classification, pregnancy category, action, uses, doses and side effects of a drug;22. identify differences in administering medication to the pediatric patient and the geriatric patient;23. list and explain the different parts of the prescription;24. identify parts of a needle and syringe and explain their function;25. select the correct syringe and needle for the intradermal, a subcutaneous and intramuscular injection;26. select the correct site for the intradermal, a subcutaneous and intramuscular injection;27. explain the purpose of tuberculin skin testing.Course Content:1.
