EE 110 Lab FPGA Intro Tutorial Fall 2009 2-1 FPGA Introductory Tutorial: Part 2 This tutorial is designed to assist in learning the basics of the Altera Quartus II v9.0 software. Part 2 of the tutorial will cover how to create a symbol file from another design file. It will also cover how to update symbol files after they are created. Create the Symbol File: 1) If you haven’t already, open an existing Block Diagram file. Be sure to save your file before continuing. 2) From the File menu, scroll down to Create / Update and click Create Symbol File for Current File. Save the file.EE 110 Lab FPGA Intro Tutorial Fall 2009 2-2 3) Create/open a new Block Diagram file that you wish to place the new symbol in. Then open the Symbol Tool and select your newly created symbol within the Project folder. Place the symbol on your Block Diagram file however you wish, just like you would with any of the basic logic elements.EE 110 Lab FPGA Intro Tutorial Fall 2009 2-3 Updating an Existing Symbol File: 1) Once a symbol is created, you many notice you made an error in the original circuit that the symbol was created from. If this is the case, simply go back and fix the error, save the file, and create another symbol file (with the same name as the original symbol file) as described in step 1 under the section “Create the Symbol File”. 2) Once the symbol is created, right click on every instance of that symbol and press Update Symbol or Block. This will update the symbol to the most currently created version of the
