Love and attractionCurrent LectureA Brief History of Love- Different cultures have held very different views of love:o Cultural love: is love desirable or undesirable?o Sexuality: should love be sexual or nonsexual?o Sexual orientation: should love involve same sex or heterosexual partners?o Marital status: should we love our spouses, or is love reserved for others?- Victorian era - romantic love became the primary element for marriage- Queen Victoria and Prince Albert - they were really in love- Brain changes with love, because of the different hormone releases the brain acts as if it has OCD- Would you Marry someone if you were not in love?o The feeling of love is universal across cultures, the way it is expressed may be different but everyone can feel love unless there’s some sort of psychopathology going ono -Serotonin levels in the blood from people suffering from OCD and noticed a similarity with people who are in love Recruited students who had recently fallen in love (17 men, 3 women), a group suffering from OCD, and a control - all 3 were tested forserotonin levels in blood, control was normal, OCD was 40% higher than normal, people in love were also 40% higher than normal Retested students a year later and found that serotonin levels in people who were in love were back to normalo Antidepressants can inhibit feelings of love bc they interfere with serotonin levelso By manipulating dopamine receptors in Voles’ brains they discovered that they became unfaithful Injected virgin males with dopamine chemical and they attached to the first female they ran into Injected long term relationship males with dopamine blocker they startedplaying the field and leaving their matesTypes of Loveo Triangular Theory of Loveo 3 different building blocks are presumed to combine t o form different types of love: intimacy, passion, commitmento Men fall in love faster than womeno Freud and Rogers said that love was important to the human conditiono Now actually considered a respectable topico Reason for this is public opinion - people thought it was impossible to study love People were trying to cut spending so they cut money in the National Science Foundation, instead of people agreeing with the cuts to peoplestudying loves it made people more curious Early 70s made it more possible to study love, encouraged to ask human questions about how they thought and felt, self report questionnairesemerged as a more legitimate research toolo Sternberg triangular theory of love Intimacy - warmth, understanding, closeness, what we feel when we really really like somebody Passion - sexual desire Commitment - decision to stay after the fireworks die awayo Amount of love depends on the strength of each component, the kind of love depends on the relationship between each componento Flaw?
