This is a DCCCD Core Curriculum Course. Prerequisite: Developmental Reading 0093 or English as a Second Language (ESOL) 0044 or have met the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standard in Reading. Course Description: Students are introduced to wellness related concepts and activities for the purpose of gaining knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate personal fitness level and to develop a personal lifelong fitness program. Activities include, but are not limited to: aerobics, circuit training, muscular development, flexibility, agility exercises, weight training and body composition. (3 Lab.) Coordinating Board Academic Approval Number 3105015223 Required Text: Handouts related to weight training and physical fitness will be given out in class. AIM OF COURSE: To provide each student with basic skills, knowledge, and appreciation of physical activity that will make him or her more effective in their daily living. TO HELP EACH STUDENT SUCCEED IN LIVING. Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Student demonstrates improvement in their fitness level as measured by their fitness scores. 2. Student designs an appropriate individual program of fitness for future fitness and wellness.Course Objectives: 1. Evaluate personal fitness levels and healthy behaviors. 2. Describe the components of physical fitness and wellness. 3. Design and implement a personal fitness program to improve fitness parameters. 4. Describe the importance of fitness and wellness as part of a healthy lifestyle. 5. Demonstrate evidence for the interaction of lifestyle and disease. 6. Identify methods for attaining lifelong fitness and wellness. 7. Discuss the contribution of physical activity to overall physical, social, mental, and emotional wellbeing. 8. Demonstrate an understanding of basic nutrition principles including principles of weight control. 9. Demonstrate an understanding of basic stress control. Additional Course Objectives: 1. To develop an understanding of the role of physical activity within our society. 2. To present information concerning the values of physical activity. 3. To aid the individual in becoming aware of personal fitness needs. 4. To develop a more adequate understanding of the concepts of activity and the circulatory system, physical fitness, fat control, exercise guidelines and the values of physical activity. To expose the student to an individualized exercise program which will aid them in improving their fitness level and make them more effective in daily life. Core Course Intellectual Competencies: In addition to the innate physical aspects of this course, the following core intellectual competencies will be included as well: Reading: Students will read the course syllabus; textbook and or class handouts; and written examinations. Writing: Students will write descriptions of personal fitness/wellness programs; maintain a written exercise log; and, may write short answer, fill-in-the-blank, and/or essay questions on written exams. Speaking: Students may verbally describe and/or justify their personal fitness/wellness goals; and may participate in class discussions. Listening: Students will listen to verbal instructions re: safe use of equipment and facilities and be able to follow those instructions; listen to lectures and obtain information regarding course objectives; and, listen to verbal directions regarding skills/techniques and be able to execute skills correctly and safely. Critical Students will apply sound fitness/wellness concepts to a personally designed program; Thinking: may evaluate various exercise or diet programs for safety and validity; may evaluate data based upon fitness/wellness assessments; and make appropriate lifestyle choices to enhance and support a personal fitness/wellness program. Evaluation: Being present and participating constitutes a major part of any physical education class. Each student will be expected to participate fully on a regular basis. Grading: Fitness Assessment 10 points Lecture (-4 points for each unexcused absence) 20 points Physical Fitness Program 10 points Food Analysis 10 points Physical Fitness workout sessions (-2 points for each unexcused absence) 40 pointsExams 10 points Total 100 points 90-100 = A 80-89 = B 70-79 = C 60-69 = D 0-59 = F Workout Session: A student must do and record the minimum amount of exercise to receive credit for that workout session. The minimum workout requirement will be explained to you by your instructor. Bonus Points: Bonus Points can be obtained for the following (limit one for points): A. Running in an organized race. (5) B. Riding in a sponsored bike rally. (5) C. Join a health club during the semester. (3) D. Purchase of major fitness equipment. (3) E. Subscription to Health and Fitness magazine. (3) (all of the above must be done during current semester) Attire: APPROPRIATE workout clothing must be worn during class. Class Procedures: 1. Be on time. 2. Be dressed to work out. 3. Bring a towel to put on workout equipment as you work out. 4. All personal belongings go in the designated area during work out. 5. Use your time wisely; about one hour per workout session is an opportunity for improvement in our
