Chabot College Fall 2010 Course Outline for Medical Assisting 70A CLINICAL SKILLS FOR THE MEDICAL ASSISTANT ICatalog Description: 70A - Clinical Skills For The Medical Assistant I 3 unitsIntroduction to the clinical role of the Medical Assistant. Includes basic and advanced skills which are utilized when assisting the physician and performing direct patient care. Prerequisite: Health 51A (may be taken concurrently). 2 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory.[Typical contact hours: lecture 35, laboratory 52.5]Prerequisite Skills: Before entering the course, the student should be able to:1. describe the components of medical terms;2. build medical terms using word parts;3. define a medical term, by dividing it into its elements;4. spell and pronounce medical terms;5. apply medical terms and abbreviations appropriately;6. identify word roots, suffixes, prefixes, anatomical, diagnostic, medical, surgical, and additional termsas they relate to each body system;Expected Outcome for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:1. perform within scope of practice2. apply local, state and federal health care legislation and regulation appropriate to the medicalassisting practice setting3. practice Standard Precautions4. select appropriate barrier/personal protective equipment (PPE) for potentially infectious situations5. perform hand washing6. demonstrate proper use of the following equipment: eye wash, fire extinguishers and sharps containers7. apply HIPAA rules in regard to privacy/release of information8. obtain vital signs9. perform patient screening using established protocols10. assist physician with patient care11. apply critical thinking skills in performing patient assessment and care12. prepare a patient for procedures and/or treatments13. report relevant information to others succinctly and accurately14. document patient care15. perform assessment and procedures on the eye16. perform assessment and procedures on the ear17. prepare items for autoclaving18. perform sterilization procedures19. assist with minor surgical procedures20. perform quality control measures21. perform CLIA waived urinalysis and urine pregnancy tests22. screen test results23. distinguish between normal and abnormal test results24. develop and maintain a current list of community resources related to patients’ healthcare needsCourse Content: 1.
