Emphasis is placed on skills used by a Medical Assistant when assisting licensed health care professionals in an ambulatory care setting such as a physician’s office or clinic. Skills taught include: OSHA Universal Standards review and practice of asepsis, cardiology and performing an EKG, specimen collection for analysis and culture (blood, urine, throat, other) microscopy, medical lab procedures, administration of medications, TB testing, respiratory therapy. Diseases, relevant anatomy, physiology, and medical documentation will be taught associated with each of these techniques. Saunders. 19951General Course Objectives: Upon Completion of this course the students will:-Demonstrate knowledge of structure and function of the circulatory, respiratory, male and female reproductive, and urinary systems and appropriate medical terminology as they relate to diagnostic examinations and clinical procedures; -List the steps to performing and rationale for clinical medical assistant procedures including: specimen collection, medication administration, EKG, and medical diagnostic (lab) procedures.-Demonstrate proficiency in performing EKG, medication administration procedures, medical laboratory testing, and patient teaching in student simulations with team members. Give instruction to the patient as appropriate considering any special needs including disabilities, or cultural preferences, Accurately document patient care. ADO 1, 9-Demonstrate knowledge of and explain rationale for legal and ethical concerns related to performance of clinical medical assisting including OSHA standards, CLIA laws, mandatory reporting procedures, HIPAA, and patient education and documentation. -Research, write, and present a 6-8 page paper on a disease, health concern, medical treatment, and or medical community resources and share with the class via oral and/or PowerPoint presentation.
