9/1/2002 God is Holy1. MotivateVerse 8 of our lesson says we are to give thanks to God. Let’s go around the room and ask each of you to share one thing you are grateful to God for.- health- grandkids- your church- your spouse- your job- your salvation- your friends- your friends- your ss class fellowship2. TransitionWhat are the benefits of becoming a grateful person?- lower blood pressure- joy- content with what you have, less discontent- you are being obedient to ScriptureToday  we focus on God's holiness and how that holiness is demonstrated the lesson will help you be convinced that God is holy and you will worship Him as the holy God.3. Bible Study3.1 Incomparably GreatListen for ways that you can acknowledge the greatness of God.1 Chron. 16:7-12 That day David first committed to Asaph and his associates this psalm of thanks to the LORD: [8] Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. [9] Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. [10] Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. [11] Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. [12] Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced, What are some words that describe how you can acknowledge the greatness of God?- give thanks- call on His name- tell others (among the nations) what He has done- Sing to Him, sing praise to Him- talk about His wonderful acts- Glory in His holy name, rejoice- go to Him for help- Remember his wonders, miracles, judgments19/1/2002 God is HolyWhat would be some evidence that you could share from your life this past week that God is alive and that He cares for you?- protection on the road- His word spoke to you- provision for finances, health, job- the beauty of a newborn babyVerse 9 commands us to sing. What do you say to a Christian who refuses to sing?- you are missing out- God is missing hearing you- check your heart’s (spiritual) condition- ask the Lord to give you a song in your heart3.2 Eternally FaithfulListen for the dominant concept in these three verses.1 Chron. 16:15-17 He remembers his covenant forever, the word he commanded, for athousand generations, [16] the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac. [17] He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant: The dominant factor is the covenant … what does it say about God and his covenant?- He remembers it forever … for 1000 generations- He made it originally with Abraham, confirmed it with Isaac, Jacob, IsraelWhat kinds of situations sometimes happen to us so that we have to break a promise or covenant or contract?- business responsibilities cause us to break promises to family- we may have a financial reversal that causes us to default on a loan- we have a health problem that causes us to cancel a vacation for which we have paid- we believe that the other party has not kept their part of the bargain so we refuse to do what we said we would (such as payment)What kinds of things happen that we feel let down by God?- an accident- health problems- business reversalsHow do we know that God did not really let us down?- God is not at fault- Life is full of problems … God is not the cause … sin is the cause- God is faithful in bringing us through those problems29/1/2002 God is HolyWhat are some ways in which God has demonstrated His eternal faithfulness?- answers to prayer- blessings that we don’t deserve- despite my unfaithfulness, He remains faithful- His forgiveness – over and over again3.3 Exclusively GodListen for differences between the Lord and other deities that people worship.1 Chron. 16:25-29 For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. [26] For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. [27] Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy in his dwelling place. [28] Ascribe to the LORD, O families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength, [29] ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name. Bring an offering and come before him; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. What are some false gods people in the world worship today? - materialism- pleasure- entertainment- power- friendships- fameWhat do people “sacrifice” to these false gods?- money- time- familyContrast God and other deities, idols that people worship.God Other Deities- great- worthy of praise- to be feared- the creator- splendor, majesty, strength, joy- He is due glory- He deserves offerings- merely idols- “idols” means nonentities, do-nothings- not to be feared- created things- not worthy of any praiseWhat are some things in our lives that make us feel helpless?- health problems- the economy (our retirement funds)- the plight of our kids, grandkids- auto accidents that happen to us where it is not our fault- the danger out on the streets39/1/2002 God is Holy- goofy government officials (at every level)Now take a moment of quietness to meditate on God's greatness, His presence.How does meditation on who God is, help those feelings of helplessness?- We are assured that God is really in charge- He is sufficient, no matter what- He cares more than we know, more than we could wish- He is at work in those situations, even when we don’t see Him3.4 Only SaviorListen for a description of the qualities of God's nature.1 Chron. 16:34-35 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. [35] Cry out, "Save us, O God our Savior; gather us and deliver us from the nations, thatwe may give thanks to your holy name, that we may glory in your praise." What are qualities of God we see in this passage?- goodness- enduring love- He is our savior- He delivers- His name (nature) is holy, separate from the ordinaryWhat are some ways that God has delivered you?- from a life of sin- from despair- from failure- from accidents- from sicknessWhat difference does it make in your life that God is a holy God – incomparably great, eternally faithful, exclusively God, and only Savior?- He is different from anything, anyone else- He can be depended on – what He says, promises – what He is capable of- He is the only one that can be depended on- He is my only hopeConsider the phrase, “Glory in your praise.” How does praising God bless you?- it becomes an attitude of faith- you become more and more convinced of God's love, God's sufficiency,
