Giancoli, Prentice Hall. (The textbook web site, http://wps.prenhall.com/esm_giancoli_physicsppa_6, contains useful practice questions for each chapter.)PREREQUISITE/CO-REQUISITE: Registration (or prior credit) for the laboratory course PHY 102M is required. The labs start to meet on Monday September 8. The web site is http://www.ph.utexas.edu/~phy102m/.High school algebra and trigonometry or M 305G is a pre-requisite. If you have taken trigonometry in high school or in another college, take your transcripts to Pat Morgan, the Physics Undergraduate Secretary, in RLM 5.216. If you have not taken trigonometry, you must take Math M 305G before taking this course. DISCUSSION SESSIONS will begin Tuesday Sept 2. Attendance at one or more discussion sessions each week is strongly recommended.Tuesday 2-3pm, 4:30-5:30pm in RLM 9.202Thursday 2:30-3:30pm, 5-6pm in RLM 9.202FREE INDIVIDUALIZED COACHING: The Physics Department provides graduate student coaches to assist students in PHY 302K and other introductory courses. This coaching on a one-on-one basis is available in the area by the elevators on the 5th floor of RLM. You are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this service. The physics coaches will be available starting Monday September 8, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. most days (hours will be posted next to the tables). Note: take the stairs or escalator one flight up from the ground floor (4th floor) to the coaching area on the 5th floor of RLM. The elevator does not stop on the 5th floor. CLASS ATTENDANCE: strongly recommended but not required. TARDINESS: Tardy arrivals are distracting and disruptive to the class. Please be seated before the bell rings and remain for the 50 minute long class. HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned by Thursday of each week and will be due no later than 4am the following Friday. The computerized homework system QUEST will be used. You must register in the Quest system to be a part of the course (see the QUEST URL above). See https://quest.cns.utexas.edu/student/help\ /view TESTS: There will be three in-class tests: SEPTEMBER 22; OCTOBER 20; and NOVEMBER 24. The tests will include concept questions, as well as problems like those worked in the discussion sessions, in class, in the text, and on the homeworks. Bring to the tests your UT ID, pencils, and a calculator. No cell phones, PDAs, iPODs, or communication devices of any kind are allowed. The use of your own homework, class notes and textbook is permitted.FINAL EXAM: The final exam will cover the material covered in class, the discussion sessions, and the homework. The final exam will be held on Tuesday, Dec 16 from 9-12am.GRADING: The lowest of the three test grades will be dropped. The two highest test grades will count a total of 20% each; class participation─10%; homework and participation in the discussion sessions─20%; final exam─30%. There will be NO make up tests; if you miss a test and have a valid excuse (e.g., a signed note from a doctor), your grade on the final exam will be substituted for the test that was missed. DROP DATES: See UT Austin Academic Calendar * Students may NOT drop courses after the final drop date (Oct 22) except by appeal in the Dean's Office for substantiated, nonacademic reasons. Note that the 2nd test will be on Oct. 20, two days before the final drop date. * Some colleges may have a one-time, no questions asked drop. The College of Natural Sciences does NOT have this
