Industrial RevolutionCurrent LectureThe election of 1860- The issue was slavery- Abraham Lincoln won- 11 states seceded- 22 remained in the union- The North had very many resources- Civil War 1861-1865o The bloodiest war of the centuryo Very costlyThe South compared to North- The union lost 360,000 people but they could afford to lose them b/c they had so many people- The South lost 260,000- Lincoln’s government spent 4 billion dollars to built factories and railroads in the North- The South spent 2 billion overseas and the money was eventually lost- The Northern soldiers went home with $235 each as Southerners went home with nothing.- Lincoln's 10% Plan: by the end of the war, if 10% of southern legislatures would pledge their loyalty to US and its laws, this group would establish a state government- 1863 Emancipation Proclamation: does not free slaves in north or border states. It frees slaves in the south. It was designed to pull the rug out from the southern economy.- The war ended April 1865- April 14th, Lincoln told cabinet that if they are wise they will get the Union on trackThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- That night Lincoln was shot to death and killed the only hope for a peaceful reconstruction in the South- Andrew Johnson took over Presidency- Organizations formed to protect the South- The Black Codes: laws passed by states and municipalities denying many right of citizenship to free black people after the warKKK- Started as an organization of vandals who would stab newly freed slaves- 1869: become so violent that the Nathan (the creator) resigned- They became very successful- KKK means a circle of like minded people- They quickly resort to violence (beatings, burning of crosses)- 1929 in Bryan, TX: the last clinching that we know of- Johnson was not able to keep country together- Congress sends Union troops down to the South- Radical Reconstruction- New president withdrawals troops from the south and it was the end of Radical ReconstructionIndustrial Revolution 1870- 1850: 9000 miles of railroad tracks in the US- 1900: 200,000 miles of railroad tracks- Population is rising in great numbers- 99 million (14 million are immigrants)- The sewing machine was formed during this time- 1867 type writer- 1878 telegraph- 1876 telephone- The flush toilet was created in 1870s by Thomas Crapper (sanitation was changed) - 1900: U.S. is the world’s leading producerYou need 4 things in order to industrialize:1. Nationalism: irrational patriotism, a belief that God is on your side,2. New View of Money: not only is money important, but the people who have it are also important3. Legal Structure: that enables you to make money without responsibilities (Corporate Law) (before the industrial revolution, French gave us legal structure) (Napoleon enforces dowry which slows French business down) (Napoleon passes a law that enforces inherited debt which also slows down business)4.
