ISBN-0534640176 Course Description: This course surveys the major theories of career choice, planning, and development as well as standardized methods of assessing vocational interests and aptitudes in school settings. Social, psychological, and economic factors influencing career choice are examined. Emphasis will be placed on individual and group career counseling skills across diverse populations.Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand career development theories and decision-making models, and career, vocational, educational, occupational and labor market information resources, and career information systems to assist students in developing employability skills and educational technical opportunities. ( 2. Develop and implement strategies and activities for preparing all students to develop employment skills for a full range of postsecondary options and opportunities. 3. Understand career development program planning, organization, implementation, administration, and evaluation. 4. Understand career and educational planning, placement, follow-up, and evaluation and the assessment instruments and techniques relevant to career planning and decision making. 5. Understand career counseling processes, techniques, and resources, including those applicable to specific populations in a global economy. 6. Understand the advocacy processes needed to address institutional and social barriers that impede access, equity and success for clients. 7. Understand interrelationships among and between work, family, and other life roles and factors, including the role of multicultural issues in career development. 8. Understand the ethical standards of professional organizations and the application of ethical and legal considerations in professional counseling. 9. Understand the qualities, principles, skills and styles of effective leadership. Calendar of Assignments: Assignment Points Due Date Reflective Autobiography 15 March 18 Midterm Exam, Chapters 1-9 20 March 20 Individualized Career Plan 25 April 15 Field Work Presentation 10 April 17 Final Exam, Chapters 10-19 20 April 17 Description of Written Assignments:*Reflective Autobiography: The Reflective Autobiography should be based on reading chapters 1-9 in the text for references, but you may refer to later chapters in the book if they relate to the autobiography. The autobiography should cover the following areas and be no more than 10 pages in length.: 1. Career Development. Give a description of your own career development from birth to the present time. Include personal events, family influences, and paid and unpaid experiences. 2. Theoretical Application. Select a career development theory which you believe best applies to your personal career development. Provide a brief explanation of your rational for the choice of this particular theory. 3. Gender Role Influences-Describe how your career development has been influenced by your gender, and where that influence was taught to you. 4. Significant Work Experience. Choose one or more significant work experience, and explain why it or they are significant in your development. 5. Most Important Skills. Identify the top skills that you possess. 6. Resume. Develop a one to two page resume that is usable. *Individualized Career Plan: Develop an individual career plan for someone you know, or yourself. Address each of the following issues: Stated goal, interest patterns, occupational clusters, personality patterns, abilities and achievements of the student, values, personal goals, desired life style, occupational outlook for the career chosen, education or training needed, career paths in the field, career plan options, and counselor notes. The paper should be no more than 10 pages in length. *Field Experience/Presentation: Each student will visit a school career center and present a summary of the experience to the class in a 15-20 minute oral report on the morning of Sunday, April 17, 2011.
