Developmental Writing: English 098 – Fall 2005 Class #/Day/Time: 16861/MW 2-3:15pm Instructor: Nicole Warwick Classroom: SH194 Email: [email protected] Office: ST 507 (818) 677-5280 Website: www.csun.edu/~nlw9004/098 Office Hour: W 3:15-4, 6-7 and by appt. LRC/Writing Lab: 677-2033 Buy These And Get These Pocket Keys for Writers 1 two-pocket folder From Sight to Insight (S to I) a spiral notebook/notebook paper & binder The Kite Runner 3 blue books New Voices, 15th edition (NV) Email account You’ll Need This, Too Once during the semester, you will need to make enough copies of one of your essays for the entire class. Please make double sided copies in order to conserve paper. The University Says… First-time freshman are required to complete all developmental writing and math courses within the first year of enrollment. The university’s “Basic Subjects” Policy requires that as soon as any needed developmental courses are completed, students must enroll in the General Education Basic Subjects (Section A) classes in writing, critical reasoning, oral communication, and math. Enrollment must be continuous until section A is completed. The Object of the Game To gain proficiency in writing as a means of preparing for English 155. Portfolio Instead of having a final, you will be required to submit a portfolio of your work, which will include one cover letter, one in-class timed essay, and the three major essays in packets including a clean copy and rough draft(s), ungraded, with assignment sheet attached It’s simple: No portfolio = no pass. Failing the portfolio = failing the class. Passing the portfolio = passing the class. In order to turn in your portfolio, you need a minimum of 750 points. Everything in the course is graded on a pass/fail basis. Do the work, show you’ve put effort into it, and you get the full amount of points. Don’t do the work or it clearly shows (in my opinion) that you haven’t done the work and haven’t put in any effort, you don’t get any points. I will always give you an explanation for giving no credit and you can always talk to me about a grade. Help! Writing help is available at the Writing Lab in the Learning Resource Center (BH408). Peer tutors help with many writing-related tasks like getting started on assignments or giving feedback on drafts. Appointments are recommended. Call (818)-677-2033 and visit the website for more information: http://www.csun.edu/~hflrc006. Cheating… …another word for plagiarism. It’s easy to avoid. If you directly use someone’s words, you need to quote and cite the page number. If you directly use some words but change others, you need to cite the page number. If you summarize or paraphrase, you need to cite the page number. If you find any or all of this confusing, it’s your responsibility to seek help. If I find out you plagiarize (it’s easier to spot than you think), I’ll inform Dr. William Watkins, the Assistant Vice President for Student Life. You never want to go there. If you need special course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability or you have special medical information to share, please speak to me immediately after the first or second class. Rules to Live By  You receive one Life Line. Use it on almost any assignment (write “Life Line” at the top of the late assignment and turn in by the next class).  All homework assignments typed.  No late homework (not in class, can’t turn in work; no emailed work).
