Kinsey “Kinsey reports” o William Masters and Virginia E Johnson Originally at the Washington University in St. Louis  At first people bought in and talked to religious communities and got support from them  Video in class- First major scientific study of sexual response Wrote the book as a medical textbook  4 phases of orgasm and detailed each part- Some overturned popular misconceptions Male sexual response is kind of like action potential, but female sexual response can continue o Karolina Widerstrom Was a doctor, most of her patients didn’t know anything about sex and hygiene etc.  Helped women understand their own anatomy o Margaret Sangero Elise Ottensen-Jenseno Marie Stopes- Sexual Attitudes o Sex among unmarried peopleo Sexual double standardo Sexual relations between people of the same sexo US attitudes  Now it's mostly ok as long as it's with intimate partners or in a relationship Men are more permissive than women  More people are open about sex than they used to be  Still not as free and liberal as other countries - Sexual Behavioro Humans are voyeuristic: we want to know what others are doingo Kinsey report informs us of thiso Sexual behavior that is common is not necessarily more appropriate o Two introductory points There’s enormous variability in behavior from person to person  Sexual behavior that is common is not necessarily more desirable or appropriate than is behavior that is less typicalo Premarital sex More than you would think Women more likely to judge themselves for it and experience remorse More likely in single parent families  When you’re stressed and pressured, you’re more likely to commit unsafepremarital sexo Sex in committed relationships Frequency decreases with age o Sexual orientation People want to understand it more this way  What we find out from them informs us about heterosexual relationships Lesbians have less sex later on than heterosexual couples Gay men have more sex later on than heterosexual couples o Monogamy Most husbands and wives don’t cheat on each other But 1/5 wives and 1/3 husbands do  Men more likely  Gay men have more extra-relational sex more than heterosexual (but maynot be cheating)o Sociosexual orientations Whether you only have sex with loved one, or with random people etc.  Emerge from beliefs and behaviors that describe and individuals feelings about sex There are two types:- Restricted and unrestricted- Restricted: when people only prefer sex in context of social committed relationshipo Tend to have more secure attachments- Unrestricted: more likely to pursue more casual sexo Tend to be more dynamic, flirtatious, social, extrovertso Are less committed to their romantic partnero Are more likely to have extra dyadic relationships People who are less satisfied are more likely to cheato Sexual desire Men tend to have higher sex drive than women on average - Experience more frequent and more intense sexual desire- More routinely motivated to engage in sexual activity - Masturbate more often- More likely to be dissatisfied with amount of sex- Spend more money on sex and are more accepting of casual sex  Frustration and annoyance is likely to occur in heterosexual
