First, there is a lab requirement. Second, there is a mandatory State Exit Exam that you must pass in order to receive credit for the course. Both of these features are described under the appropriate headings below.HOMEWORK:Homework will be assigned during each class meeting. The assigned homework problems constitute a list of the things you will be expected to know how to do. The best way to ensure that you know how to do something is to actually do it on a regular basis. Although the homework assignments will not be collected or graded, you must complete these assignments in order to learn the course material and prepare yourself for the exams. Questions appearing on the exams will be similar to those encountered in the homework.TESTS:There will be seven unit-tests given throughout the semester, plus a State Exit Exam. All tests except the Exit Exam will carry equal “weight”. In order to be counted, each test must be taken in class at the scheduled time, unless alternate arrangements are made in advance. If you miss a test, a score of zero will be recorded. At the end of the semester, the single lowest score among the seven unit-tests will be replaced by the Exit Exam score, provided this works to your advantage. (Note: When the Exit Exam score replaces a lower test score, the result is that the Exit Exam carries double “weight”; it counts once in its own behalf, and once again for the score it replaces.)STATE EXIT EXAM:A comprehensive Exit Exam will be administered during final exam week. The Exit Exam will be mandatory. This is a multiple-choice exam consisting of approximately 30 questions. The Florida Department of Education requires that any student registered for this course must score 60% or higher on the Exit Exam in order to receive credit forMAT 0020 COLLEGE PREPARATORY MATHEMATICS REFERENCE #368015SYLLABUS AND COURSE OUTLINE FALL 2006completing the course successfully.LAB REQUIREMENT:The Florida Department of Education also requires that you complete a total of 32 hours of study time in our Math Lab. The Math Lab is located in Room 3319. You should proceed to the lab on your own time, as early in the term as possible. The first time you enter the Lab, you will need to present a copy of your paid schedule to make sure thatyou are properly credited for the time you spend there. The Lab staff will present you with a copy of the Lab rules and regulations that you must follow throughout the term. Our expectation is that you will invest an average of two hours per week of study time in the Lab, above and beyond the time you spend in class. You may attend the Lab at any time of your choosing, as long as it is within the Lab’s hours of operation.Every week, I will receive a report from the Lab indicating how many hours you have invested to that point. If you begin to lag too far behind schedule in completing your lab requirement, you run the risk of being dropped from my roster. Look below under the heading of “Attendance” for more details.GRADES:You may exercise your option to drop the class with a “W” grade, provided you initiate such action no later than Tuesday, October 31. (Note: This withdrawal deadline is established through the Registrar's Office and is subject to change. You may wish to contact the Registrar in advance for confirmation of the withdrawal deadline.) If you have not withdrawn from the class by that date, I will be required to assign you a grade at the end of the term. There are three possible grades that you may receive in this course: “S”, “P”, or “U”.The “S” grade: This is the highest grade you can achieve. “S” stands for “Satisfactory”. This grade earns you credit for successful completion of the course and permits you to enroll in MAT 1033 (Intermediate Algebra) if you so desire. There are three conditions you must meet in order to earn an “S” grade.1. You must average 65% or better on the seven unit-tests that I give throughout the semester;2. You must score at least 60% on the State Exit Exam; and3. You must complete your 32-hour lab requirement.Do not expect any exceptions to these requirements, or any leniency, especially with regard to the Exit Exam score and the number of lab hours. The second and third requirements are imposed by the State of Florida, and I have no authorization to alter them in any way.The “P” grade: This is the second highest grade you can achieve. “P” stands for “Progress”. This grade does not earn you credit for successful completion of the course. It requires you to either repeat MAT 0020 or register instead for MAT 0024 (Elementary Algebra) as your next Math course. (MAT 0024 is very similar to MAT 0020. Both courses cover college preparatory algebra. The difference is that MAT 0024 eliminates the review of arithmetic, and counts for 4 credits instead of 5.) You will qualify for a “P” grade if you meet any two of the three requirements for the “S” grade. It is worth noting that a “P” grade does not affect your grade point average,The “U” grade: This is the lowest grade you can achieve. “U” stands for “Unsatisfactory”. This grade does not earn you credit for successful completion of the course. It requires that you repeat MAT 0020 and does not allow you the option to take MAT 0024 as your next Math course. You will qualify for the “U” grade if you meet less than two of the three requirements for the “S” grade. It is worth noting that a “U” grade affects your
