Exam over Primitive, Ancient, Medieval, and Renaissance timesOutline of Current Lecture II.Romantic EraIII.Ballet “La Sylphide”Current LectureThe Romantic Era - Ballets of the Romantic Era (1800s)- France is still the epicenter of Ballet- Dancers wore pointe shoes- satin slipper with a wooden box at the toe- Ideal ballet body- long arms and legs, good elevation, strong jump, short torso, small head. Russian ballet schools will not take a child who does not have a ballet body. This body can take technique that is being posed upon.Know the names of ballets- - “La Sylphide” (1832) - setting, storyline, characters, innovations, techniques sylpho Filippo Taglioni (1778-1871) choreographer from Italy who is working in France; worked with Royal Academy Of Dance and the Paris Opera, daughter was a well-known ballerina (ballerinas were role models for young women). He created this ballet for his daughter.o Typical romantic, tragedy, STORY balleto 2 hour ballet with lots of pantomime; music in this ballet tells you what is going to happeno Notes on this Ballet we watched during class-o Story line of this ballet-o Act I: La Sylphide is a ballerina (wearing a skirt called a tutu, romantic era they are long) in white; she is the main character. She is a sylph -a fairy, another nonhuman ethereal creature, the wings she is wearing tells the audience thiso Set in Scotland, grand manor house; early in the morning (lighting tells mood, place, time of day) wedding dayo Mechanical devices used in this ballet for the first time by engineers. o Starts off with a man sleeping in a chair (James), he wakes up to Sylph who he cannot touch. Then many others come in for a celebration/ gathering for a party. This ballet is the eve of the wedding of the sleeping man; he is engaged to the woman in plaidThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. James tries to throw the odd witch out but fiancé stops himo Everyone leaves stage except for Jameso Sylph is back and is very sad. She dances with James who is trying to make her not be sad. She says she is sad because he is getting married, and then she dances for himo She leaves and James dances alone, very athletically. (Females are much less athletic andmore delicate)o Act II: starts off with odd witch woman again doing lots of dancing/pantomime; she was making a potion with her other wicked witcheso Set in the forest, 3 sylphs with Queen of the sylph in middleo Prima ballerina (the main Sylph) and premier danseur (James)o The main sylph dies because James was tricked to give her the potion from the witcho James is very sad; ends up being a tragedy because he cannot be with
