ISBN 10: 1-4130-3344-X 13:978-1-4130-3341-1 Videos: See the tab for these on our home page CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION: ENGL 1302 Composition II (3) Prerequisite: English 1301 and have met Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standard in Reading and Writing. In this course students refine the writing, research, and reading skills introduced in English 1301. A related goal is the development of critical thinking skills. Writing assignments emphasize argumentation and persuasion. Students will also write a formal research paper. (3 lec.) Coordinating Board Academic Approval Number 2304015135 DISTANCE LEARNING COURSE DESCRIPTION English 1302 comprises a television presentation, online discussion, textbook readings and interactive activities. The student will write four major assignments, one formal research paper and 5 short responses to readings.STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES 1) To understand and demonstrate writing and speaking processes through invention, organization, drafting, revision, editing, and presentation. 2) To understand the importance of specifying audience and purpose and to select appropriate communication choices. 3) To understand and appropriately apply modes of expression, i.e. descriptive, expository, narrative, scientific, and self-expressive in written, visual, and oral communication. 4) To participate effectively in groups with emphasis on listening, critical and reflective thinking, and responding. 5) To understand and apply basic principles of critical thinking, problem solving, and technical proficiency in the development of exposition and argument. 6) To develop the ability to research and write a documented paper and/or to give an oral presentation. INTELLECTUAL COMPETENCIES English 1302 addresses the following intellectual competencies: 1) Reading: The ability to analyze and interpret a variety of printed materials---books, documents, and articles---above 12th grade level. 2) Writing: The ability to produce clear, correct, and coherent prose adapted to purpose, occasion and audience---above 12th grade level. 3) Critical Thinking: Think and analyze at a critical level. 4) Computer Literacy: Understand our technological society, use computer-based technology in communication. WELCOME to The Writer’s Odyssey! You are about to embark on a journey into the fascinating world of writing. On your journey, you’ll meet two instructional gurus, five distance learning students (and a few of their friends), and a host of working writers who will be sharing their insights about the world of writing. STUDENT E-MAIL Legal privacy issues prevent your instructor from discussing your work or your grades on commercial e-mail accounts. If you wish to send your papers as attachments to an e-mail (and the instructor permits it), or if you have a question about your grade, you must open a student e-mail account. The account is free. You may set up your account by going to www.dcccd.edu and by clicking on Student Services, Online Services, and Student NetMail.COURSE MEETINGS This course will meet one day a week on campus and attendance is required; the other assignments will be done by the student on the computer. Go to e-Campus (Blackboard) and sign on with your student ID. The first time you sign on the password is the same as your student ID. After you are signed on, IMMEDIATELY change your password and then check your personal information to see that your student email is the one displayed so I may contact you in a timely manner. Next, go to the Begin Here tab and learn how to navigate through the website. COURSE EXPECTATIONS To complete this course successfully, you should do the following: ● Participate in the course orientation activities. ● View all the thirty-minute video lessons. ● Complete all the assignments in the week-by-week section under Assignments in eCampus (Blackboard) ● Prepare and submit all writing assignments. Remember that you must turn in all assignments to receive a passing grade in the course. Assignments must be turned in on the assigned due dates unless you have special permission from the instructor. You may not turn in a substantial amount of work at the same time. You may NOT turn in all assignments at the end of the semester. This is NOT a self-paced course. Please follow these instructions when writing your papers: ● Writing assignments must be typed. ● Use a standard font and font size of 12 pt. (Times New Roman). ● Double-space. ● Essay Writing Assignments are three full pages in length. ● Reading Response Assignments must be ONE FULL PAGE ONLY.● Research Paper must be 6-8 pages in length of text. Pay attention to spelling, grammar, and punctuation. ● Due dates for all assignments are noted in the Course Calendar ● No late papers are accepted. - You must follow 2009 MLA Format Attendance Policy: Beyond two absences there will be a deduction of five points for each additional absence from your final grade. To enable you to keep up with your grade status on Blackboard, I post grades as points but then convert them to a percentage system when finalizing the course grade. At that time I factor in the absences and deduct necessary points from the percentage grade. For example, if you have 830 points after the final exam, I convert that number to 83. If you accumulated four absences during the semester, I disregard the first two and deduct five points for each subsequent absence. Therefore, I would deduct ten points from 83, and the final course grade would become 73. Please keep track of
