COURSE INFORMATION BIOL 2402 (4:3:3) ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY II Jackie A. Wright Biology Department Division of Arts and Sciences Levelland Campus SOUTH PLAINS COLLEGE Spring Semester - 2011BIOLOGY 2402 Human Anatomy and Physiology Spring 2011 Instructor Dr. Jackie Wright Office S147 Phone (806) 894-9611, ext. 2638 E-mail [email protected] Office hours: M 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM, 1:30 – 2:30 PM T 8:30 AM – 9:00 AM W 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM, 1:30 – 2:30 PM R 3:30 – 4:00 PM F 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Appointments are recommended even during my office hours. Since there are 3 classes, this will assure you will get the time you need. For other times than my office hours, you need to make an appointment with me, so that it is a mutually agreeable time. Prerequisites 1. You must have completed BIOL 2401 with a grade of C or better. (Anyone who has not completed BIOL 2401 will be dropped from the class before the 12th class day.) 2. You should have completed CHEM 1406 or its equivalent with a C or better. (If your major does not require Chemistry, you will need to spend extra time and effort over and above your regular study time to make sure you understand everything in Chapter 2 of the Marieb and Hoehn text. A&P II involves much more chemistry than does A&P I.) Purpose The purpose of this course is to provide a general understanding of human anatomy and physiology for students in the allied health fields and to meet requirements for an Associate Degree. In addition, this class may meet the requirements of transfer students working toward a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree. Objectives General 1. To help the student to acquire knowledge of the normal development, structures, and functions of the human body. 2. To provide a science foundation for the undergraduate college and university student. 3. To provide a foundation for understanding pathology, i.e. deviations from normal anatomy and physiology.Specific (Common to all BIOL 2402 classes.) Student Learning Outcomes: Students who have completed this course will be expected to: 1) Describe the major endocrine organs and their secretory products including: target tissues, effects on target tissues, signal transduction by second messengers, and utilized homeostatic mechanisms. 2) Describe the composition of blood and plasma including its formation, and functional properties. 3) Understand ABO and Rh blood typing. 4) Identify anatomical structures of the heart and major blood vessels relating their structural relationships to one another. 5) Discuss the phases of the cardiac cycle and calculate cardiac output. 6) Explain the homeostatic regulation of blood pressure and cardiac output. 7) Describe the specific and non-specific immune systems with the cells and other factors important to them. 8) Describe the anatomy and function of the airways, lungs, and larynx. 9) Explain inspiration, expiration, gas exchange, and normal respiratory volumes. 10) Demonstrate knowledge of respiratory control systems and their anatomic locations. 11) Identify components of the urinary system and functions each one performs. 12) Explain the buffering systems, acid-base imbalances, and body compensatory mechanisms involved in acid-base balance of body fluids. 13) Describe the juxtaglomerular apparatus and explain its function. 14) Demonstrate knowledge of the organs and accessory structures of the digestive system including their anatomical location, functions, and utilized homeostatic mechanisms. 15) Explain the release and function of the major enteroendocrine hormones. 16) Describe selected digestive enzymes and their action on the three classes of nutrients. 17) Describe the components of the male and female reproductive systems and summarize the function of each. Study A&P II requires much more study time than you probably did for A&P I. You should be prepared to study at least 15 hours or more per week outside of class time just for this class. Your out of class study time must also include lab study on models. I recommend that you study for 2 or more hours each day for this class alone. Every time you have to repeat a prerequisite science class for your medically related choice of profession, you are putting yourself at risk of not being accepted. Since A&P II builds on information you should already have learned in A&P I, you should review the following topics if you don’t remember them: basic chemistry (chapter 2 in Marieb and Hoehn), cell anatomy and physiology including membrane transport and protein synthesis (Chapter 3 in Marieb and Hoehn), muscle contraction (chapter 9 in Marieb and Hoehn), and the action potential and synaptic transmission (Chapter 11 in Marieb and Hoehn). I recommend that you read the chapter prior to my lecture. This will familiarize you with some of the vocabulary that I will be using, and it will help you to understand the lecture better. The lecture outlines and PowerPoint notes are not complete. You must take notes in class as well. If you are not a quick note taker, I advise getting yourself a tape recorder and recording lecture, so that you can fill in any part of your notes that you missed during class. Since you will have anatomy and physiology questions on your licensure board exams, you will need to study in a manner that allows you to retain this information for the long term. That will require that you spend time reviewing as well as studying the current unit. Required materials Marieb, E. N. and Hoehn, K. Human Anatomy & Physiology, 8th ed. WEB access to Mastering A&P (Textbook WEB site) (With textbook package or can be purchased online.) Lecture Outlines/Notes/PowerPoint Slides ***If you are using the Technology Center, you will not be able to print more than 12 pages at a time. You will only be able to print the PowerPoint slides as Handouts with 6 slides per page. You can print them anyway you would like if you use your own printer.
