Introduction*to*Social*Network*Analysis*Soc.%128/%228%M‐W%9.30‐10.45%%Instructor:%Paolo%Parigi%Office%hours:%Monday,%11‐1%%This%class%focuses%on%key%concepts%of%social%network%analysis%(SNA)%and%is%aimed%toward%beginners.%The%level%of%mathematical%sophistication%required%is%minimum.%%SNA%is%a%perspective%of%sociology%that%has%its%own%set%of%methods.%While%for%the%most%part%sociology%looks%at%the%characteristics%of%the%individuals,%things%such%as%gender,%race,%ethnicity,%nationality,%political%preferences,%to%infer%behavior,%SNA%looks%at%the%relationships%between%individuals%as%the%most%proximate%cause%for%understanding%behavior.%SNA%has%developed%key%conceptual%tools%for%capturing%the%role%of%relationships%and%it%is%on%these%concepts%that%the%class%focuses.%This%is%not%a%class%on%methods%of%network%analysis.%Instead%it%is%a%class%on%the%concepts%of%SNA.%My%aim%is%to%provide%you%with%a%kit%of%analytical%tools%for%doing%original%sociological%research.%%%The%class%is%labor%intensive.%Your%final%grade%will%have%three%components:%1.%Your%participation%in%class%(30%).%%2%Your%understanding%of%key%concepts%as%measured%by%in‐class%tests%(30%);%3.%A%final%paper%(40%);%%%Class%Participation%Each%week%will%cover%a%different%concept%of%SNA%and%its%possible%applications.%You%are%expected%to%come%to%class%ready%to%discuss%the%assigned%reading.%Toward%this%goal,%you%will%write%a%memo%of%approximately%2%pages%summarizing%the%reading%and%highlighting%the%aspects%of%the%reading%that%interest%you.%We%will%use%your%memos%as%a%basis%for%our%class%discussion.%The%memos%are%due%at%5pm%on%the%day%before%our%class%discussion%and,%while%they%will%not%be%graded%per%se,%failure%to%turn%them%in%will%lower%your%overall%grade%for%participation.%%%Understanding%of%Key%Concepts%I%am%going%to%measure%your%understanding%of%key%concepts%with%2%in‐class%tests.%These%tests%will%each%have%4%broad%questions%related%to%the%concepts%covered%in%class%up%to%that%point.%You%will%have%to%take%the%test%during%the%class%time.%In%preparation%for%the%test,%I%will%provide%you%with%a%list%of%sample%questions%a%few%days%in%advance.%%%The%Final%Paper%The%final%is%a%data%collection%project%for%which%you%will%collect%your%own%relational%data.%Relational%data%means%that%you%define%what%is%a%node%and%what%is%a%relation%between%the%nodes.%For%example,%if%a%node%is%a%person,%friendship%can%be%the%relation;%if%a%node%is%a%student,%sharing%class%notes%could%be%the%relation;%if%the%node%is%a%club,%a%fraternity%or%a%sorority,%common%membership%in%the%clubs%could%be%the%relation.%You%will%have%to%relate%the%collection%of%this%data%to%one%of%the%key%concepts%of%SNA%discussed%in%class.%The%collected%data%will%be%stored%in%an%electronic%format%and%must%be%included%in%the%final%paper.%The%data%must%include%at%least%30%nodes%and%50%ties.%%The%class%lecture%in%Week%3%will%discuss%the%final%paper%in%more%details%and%I%will%provide%you%guidelines%on%the%proper%format%for%storing%the%data%electronically.%%Reading%material%The%class%does%not%have%a%textbook%but%uses%a%reader.%%%A%large%part%of%the%readings%are%journal%articles%available%on‐line.%I%have%placed%a%copy%of%the%articles%in%the%“material”%section%of%Coursework%for%the%class.%These%articles%are%not%in%the%reader.%%Week%1%Sept.%20:%%
