COURSE OUTLINE THET-241 Acting for Television 3 Credits HOWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE Description This class will prepare students to present themselves in a professional manner in any of the mass media. Voice, appearance, movement and the technical aspects of the mass media performance will be covered through comprehensive exercises and on-camera evaluation. Prerequisite: THET-102. (4 hours weekly) Overall Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Recall basic terms and vocabulary relevant to working mass media actors. 2. Discuss the significant differences between acting for the stage vs. the camera. 3. Memorize TV scripts to be performed before the camera. 4. Perform for the camera with artistic consideration to commercial advertisement, broadcast journalism and TV comedy/drama. 5. Illustrate make-up and wardrobe guidelines for mass media. 6. Take direction and adjust a performance accordingly. 7. Prepare an acting resume, headshot and demo reel. 8. Discuss the role of the union. (AFTRA/SAG) 9. Critically evaluate an actor's performance. Trade Papers Course Requirements Grading/exams: Grading Procedures will be determined by individual faculty members but will include: Attendance and participation in class is required. The student will do assigned readings in the required text. There will be five graded videotaped performances (2 Standard VHS Videotapes are required) 1. A Commercial 2. A Journalistic Broadcast 3. A Dramatic/Comedic Scene, Film style (with at least two actors) 4. A Dramatic/Comedic Scene, Multi-camera (with at least two actors) 5. An Audition Monologue Students will be graded on the quality of work done. The experience level of the individual will be taken into consideration.
