Study Guide for Midterm #1 Chapter 1: The Human Body What is anatomy and physiology? What is difference between gross and microscopic anatomy? Know the levels of organization. Which levels are chemical levels and which are tissue levels. Know the overall responsibility of each system discussed i.e. the integumentary system is the outer covering of the body. Know the 8 life functions necessary for life. How do they differ from the survival needs? What are the survival needs of the body? What is homeostasis? What is positive and negative feedback? Which is common in the body? Know the directional terms. Know which cavities make up the dorsal and ventral body cavities. Chapter 2: Chemistry What is matter? What is energy? What is the difference between kinetic and potential energy? What are the 4 forms of energy? Is energy easily converted from one type to another? What is an element? What are the building blocks of elements? What is the structure of an atom? What are its components? What are the charges of its components? What is the atomic number? Atomic mass? Atomic weight? What are isotopes? What is the difference between a molecule and a compound? What are the three types of bonds we discussed? Be able to describe each type of bond and give examples. What is a synthesis rxn? What is a decomposition rxn? What is an exchange rxn? If given an example, could you identify which type of rxn it is? What is the difference between organic and inorganic compounds? What are some examples of inorganic compounds? Understand the pH scale. What is basic, what is acidic? What are the four macromolecules that are organic molecules? Describe the building blocks of each group. Be able to distinguish one from another. Understand characteristic of each group. If examples were given, be familiar with them.Chapter 3: Cells and Tissues Know the structures of the cell and the roles the structures play. Be able to identify the structures on an image. Be familiar with any special characteristics of the structures and what the purpose of the structure is i.e. microvilli of the plasma membrane What types of junctions might be seen? What makes up the cytoplasm? Know the different types of organelles we discussed and what roles they play inside the cell. What are centrioles? What are cilia or flagellum? What types of cells are there in the body and what are their functions? What is a solvent and what is a solute? What does selective permeability mean? What is passive transport? What are the different types? What is active transport? What are the different types? Endocytosis, Exocytosis, Phagocytosis, Pinocytosis What are the different divisions of the cell cycle? What happens in each stage? What are the events of mitosis? What is epithelium tissue? What are some characteristics of epithelium tissue? Be able to classify simple and stratified epithelium. Glandular epithelium. What are the 5 types of Connective Tissues and examples of each? What is connective tissue? What are the 3 types of muscle tissue? What makes up nervous
