Abnormal Psychology: An Integrated Approach (6th Ed.). Wadsworth Publishing. American Psychiatric Press (2000). Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders-TR (4th Ed.) VA: APA Press. Course Description: This course provides an introduction to the definition and study of abnormal or maladaptive behavior, including a broad range of psychopathology relevant to the adult and aged populations. Emphasis will be placed on a descriptive review of the major DSM-IV disorders, supplemented with theoretical considerations of etiology and treatment approaches including the use of psychopharmacological interventions. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) Recognize and classify psychopathology within the current diagnostic system. 2) Know the etiology, the diagnostic process and nomenclature, treatment, referral, and prevention of mental and emotional disorders. 3) Have knowledge of ethical treatment approaches for each disorder.4) Have knowledge of the basic psychotropic medications used in the major disorders for the purpose of making appropriate referrals and monitoring side effects. 5) Describe how each major psychiatric disorder will present on the mental status examination. 6) Understand the impact of trauma causing events such as crises and disasters, as well as the operation of emergency managements systems within the clinical mental health community. This course will provide the student with an in-depth introduction to the general and specific components of abnormal psychology and psychopathaological disorders as viewed through historical and contemporary models. Beyond merely being able to identify psychological disorders by symptoms, students will be able to think critically about specific disorders, applying multiple theories in order to understand them from different viewpoints. This task includes an understanding of these disorders and theories within the context of general theoretical concepts, etiology, symptomatology, epidemiology, and treatment. Historical and cultural considerations are included. Material will be presented through lectures, videotapes, case studies, and class discussions. Calendar of Assignments: 1. Prior to First Weekend Class Meeting Read Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 2. Prior to Second Weekend Class Meeting Read Chapters 6, 8, 11, 12, 13, 15 3. Class Assignments A. Mid-Term Examination: August 12, 2011 B. Final Examination: August 14, 2011 C. Research Paper: Five (5) double spaced, APA style research paper on DSM-IV TR diagnosis with relevant literature concerning symptomatology, associated features, etiology, and treatment.
