THEATRE METHODS IDEAS & DRAFT SYLLABUSSonja WiedenhauptLeslie VanLeishout, How would you like to be identified besides Highschool TheatreTeacher, River Ridge Highschool?By the end of the quarter you will demonstrate the following knowledge and skills:1. Knowledge of the scope and sequence within the GLE’s? Frameworks? which makes sense?for:- Elementary K-5 (6 years)- Middle 6-8 (3 years)- High School 9-12 (3 years)2. Knowledge of how to work with and integrate CBPA’s into teaching. 3. How to design long term goals for unit planning4. How to design specific learning objectives to meet long term goals5. How to design appropriate grade level scope and sequence of lessons for the knowledge and skills necessary to perform of a 1 act play.6. Increased knowledge in one area of theatre pedagogy (building blocks, rehearsal & performance, tech & design)You’ll demonstrate your knowledge and skill through:1. Outline of plan for preparing students to learn the knowledge and skills necessary to stage and perform a 1 act play. 2. Complete design of at least one Curriculum Unit to span 3 weeks of that plan with a focus on particular aspect of theatre pedagogy you want to refine (see curriculum development project for program)Week Discussion focus1 March 30 Discussion with Leslie & Sonja at RiveridgeGo over syllabus & projectStandards and CBPA, part 1assignment for today: Students will review middle level and high school theatre standards/GLEs do you want them to review the draft theatre GLE’s listed at http://www.k12.wa.us/curriculumInstruct/Arts/pubdocs/TheatreGLEDocumentDraft.doc? Or other standards (e.g. http://www.k12.wa.us/curriculumInstruct/Arts/frameworks/Stheatre.aspx )?I wasn’t sure from my notes if you wanted their opinions of the standards or of the cpbas? - What’s your opinion of the standards- How do you see yourselves fitting in to the standards- Which of them feel authentic to the classroom and whyShould they examine and try to do one of the CPBA’s ? If so, any one in particular?2 April 6 At Evergreen w/ SonjaHow is teaching theatre at the elementary school similar/distinct from that in middle and high school? Present ideas for 1 act play that you could use for elementary, middle and high school– with a focus on sustainability. (This is the focus of the curriculum project for the program. Do you think it’s possible to find relevant plays with this big theme in mind)Read through 1 and explore the dimensions of preparation and teaching this will involveAssignment for today:Study the scope and sequence using OSPI Frameworks/GLE’s for:- Elementary K-5 (6 years)- Middle 6-8 (3 years)- High School 9-12 (3 years)Bring 1 act plays that you could use for elementary, middle and high school.I remember you saying, Leslie, that the developmental scope and sequence by grade in many ways doesn’t make sense because students come into the theatre classes with such a broad range of experience. With that in mind, how do you make sense of the function and value of these frameworks? How do you as a theatre teacher work with them?3 April 13 Discussion with Leslie at RiveridgeTopic to be decided by Leslie & students -- perhaps particular questions/issues will come up from last week’s discussion in class that students could write a reflection on and send to you in advance of this week’s meeting?assignment for today:4 April 20 At Evergreen w/ SonjaResource presentationsPresent and peer review lesson relevant to the area of theatre pedagogy that you are working to develop.5 WednesdayApril 292:30 – 5 Attend dress rehearsal 6 May 4 Discussion with Leslie at Riveridgeassignment for today: Draft of Plan for 1 Act Play7 May 11 Discussion with Leslie at RiveridgeWorking with CBPA, part 2assignment for today: 8 May 18 At Evergreen w/ SonjaResource presentationsPresent peer review relevant to the area of theatre pedagogy that you are working to develop.9 MEMORIAL DAY10 June 1 Discussion with Leslie at Riveridgeassignment for today: Presentation of plan of one act plays & presentation of a lesson plan relevant to the area of theatre pedagogy that you are working to develop. Reflection prompt for observationsProject: 1. Plan for 1 act play: Scenario -- You are going to direct a 1 act play with 32 children. You get to rehearse 1 hour a day, you have 1 dress rehearsal and 1 performacne. You have a budget of $50. Your plan needs to include: - Your choice and rational for the play given the age group &demographic of the group you envision working with.. - Plan for how you will cast the play- The skills and knowledge you need to help students develop in preparation for the acting, the staging and technical production.- An outline of the units and lessons you’ll need to teach to meet this goal.- a set of lesson plans for a week long unit within this outlinethat deals with an area of teaching theatre that you’d like tolearn/refine (e.g. fundamental principles of acting, rehearsal/performance, tech & design)- A contingency plan for “what if’s” (e.g. what if actor doesn’tshow up for performance)In addition, your plan should identify the theatre standards that reflect the knowledge and skills that students will develop. How would you build in the CPBA into this project? 2. Peer review 2 lesson plans that are tied to this area of teaching that you are trying to refine your skills in.3. Develop resource library for teaching theatre – - critically review texts relevant to the area of theatre that you are trying to developI’m still ruminating how to do handle the readings. Part of me is thinking that the students should review several texts and develop a resource library as a result of this methods class. I could order from the library a bunch of texts tied to teaching theatre from the authors that you recommended (e.g. heathcote, wang, etc) and from the syllabus I shared with you. The students could go through the stack and identify 1-2 general theatre methods books that they plan to study in depth, be prepared to discusswith each other what they are learning form the text. In addition they could identify, examine and write annotations for 5 resources that will help them deepen their knowledge of some aspect of theatre pedagogy (e.g. building blocks, rehearsal & performance, tech & design). What do you
