BIO162 Microbiology Concepts for Allied Health Syllabus Fall 2007 Section 0648 Prof. Page Baluch email: [email protected] Office hours: By appointment Course Website: http://www.public.asu.edu/~pbaluch Course meets at Mesa Community College at Southern/Dobson Lecture/Laboratory: LS 105 [TTH 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.] Required Texts: Microbiology for the Health Sciences, 8th edition, by Burton and Engelkirk Microbiology for Allied Health, by Zabezensky, Johnson, Mason and Whysong Required Laboratory Items: Lab coat, safety glasses (must be left in the lab for the semester), fine point waterproof marker and closed-toe shoes. Course description: The course is designed to introduce the students to the basic concepts of microbiology and related techniques in the study of microorganisms with emphasis on the microbe-human relationship. The course will discuss the following topics: types of microorganisms, principles of growth and reproduction for specific types of microorganisms, chain of disease transmission and defense mechanisms, use of compound microscope, safe handling and culturing of specific microbes, methods of sterilization and use of disinfectants and chemotherapeutic agents. Prerequisites: None. Although there is no prerequisite, high school or introductory college chemistry and biology is highly recommended. Lecture notes: Power point files of the lecture will be available on the following website: http://www.public.asu.edu/~pbaluch. Grading: Your grade for the course will be determined based on 655 points. 3 lecture exams (100 points each) 1 Final exam (100 points) Lecture attendance (15 Pts): ~1/2 point every day present10 Quizzes (10 points each) 14 Lab Assignments (10 points each) Grading Policy: The grade you earn for the course will be determined based upon 655 points. 587 points and above A 521 - 586 points B 456 - 520 points C 390 - 455 points D 389 and less Fail Homework will be due at the beginning of each lab. No homework will be accepted after lab begins and the attendance is taken. The application questions completed for the previous lab class will be reviewed at the beginning of each lab after I hand the application questions back. Lab exercise questions tend to randomly show up on the exams so make sure you understand what is going on in the lab! Exams and Quizzes: Exams will be predominantly multiple choice, short answer and slide identification. Quizzes will be given at the beginning of class and will cover material from the previous lab. Approximately half of the final may be cumulative, covering the material tested on the three mid-terms. If you miss an exam, you must have an acceptable excuse and contact me as soon as possible. In place of the missed exam your final exam will be worth 200 points! To pass this course you must take the final exam and at least two lecture exams. Academic Dishonesty will result in a zero for that assignment as well as an “F” or “Y” for the course at the instructor’s discretion. All incidents will be reported to the department chair and the academic dean of students. Attendance Policy: Students who do not attend the first lecture session or contact the instructor will be automatically dropped from the course. Because this is a lecture/lab combination class, regular attendance is required. Three absences will result in a withdrawal from the course without notification. Students should arrive on time as lecture assignments or lab quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class. There are no makeup quizzes or assignments. Since this is the only time this course if offered so you will not be able to attend another lab session for a make-up. Disability Statement: The College will make reasonable accommodations for persons with documented disabilities. Students should notify Student Services and their instructors of any special needs. Disability Resources & Services can be reached at 480-461-7447. The DRS office will provide written documentationregarding the necessary accommodations. The DRS is located in building 37, on the east side of the courtyard next to the Kirk Student Center (8-8 M -TH, and 8-5 on Fridays). Classroom Rules and Visitation: To facilitate effective teaching and learning, students should show respect to his/her fellow student’s right of an effective learning environment by abiding to the following rules. 1. Disruptive and disrespectful behavior on the part of the student towards the instructor or other students will not be tolerated. Students exhibiting such behavior will be asked to leave the classroom. 2. Cell phones or beepers must be turned off and kept in your book bag/purse in class. Student who violates this rule will be asked to leave the class for the remainder of the class period. 3. A list of lab and safety rules is available in your lab manual. Know and observe these rules! Safety is everyone’s business. No eating or drinking is allowed in the laboratory. Students who violate these rules will be asked to leave the classroom for the remainder of that class. Close-toed shoes are required! 4. The university only covers liability insurance on employees and students registered in the class therefore no outside visitors are allowed during class hours under any circumstances. NO FOOD OR DRINK is allowed in the laboratory under any circumstances. Arizona Revised Statutes §15-151 specifies that every student, teacher and visitor in community colleges must wear appropriate protective eye wear while participating in or when observing vocational, technical, industrial arts activities involving exposure to: molten metals; molten materials; cutting, shaping, and grinding of materials; heat treatment; tempering or kiln firing of any metal or other materials; welding fabrication processes; explosive materials; caustic solutions; and radioactive materials. Lab Schedule: The following lab schedule is subject to change due to availability of laboratory organisms and/or equipment.
