ISBN: 978-1-59385-572-7 Course Description: This course provides an introduction to the definition and study of abnormal or maladaptive behavior, including a broad range of psychopathology relevant to the adult and aged populations. Emphasis will be placed on a descriptive review of the major DSM-IV disorders, supplemented with theoretical considerations of etiology and treatment approaches, including the use of psychopharmacological interventions. Course Objectives: At the end of the course the student will: 1. Recognize and classify psychopathology within the DSM-IV diagnostic system 2. Understand the primary etiological factors and theoretical models proposed for the major psychiatric disorders 3. Have knowledge of ethical treatment approaches to each disorder4. Have knowledge of the basic psychotropic medications used in major disorders for the purpose of making appropriate referrals and monitoring side effects 5. Be able to describe how each major psychiatric disorder will be present on the mental status examination 6. Be aware of current clinically validated protocols for the treatment of each disorder. 7. Understand the impact of trauma causing events such as crises and disasters, as well as the operation of the emergency management systems within the clinical mental health community. Calendar of Assignments: Because of the time constraints involved, students should attempt to read assignments prior to coming to class. Preferable during the third week of January, all students should contact the instructor by e-mail to receive the take-home midterm assignment. Without reading ahead of time, the student will have a great deal of difficulty completing the final examination. The outline below is suggested to facilitate keeping up with the course. 1. By January 22, 2009, contact the instructor at [email protected] or [email protected] to receive the midterm assignment. Begin reading the Barlow text and complete Chapters 1 through 5. 2. Prior to January 30, 20098, read chapters 12 though 16 of the Barlow text and read Chapters 1, 3, 9, 12, and 16 though 25 of the Sadock & Saddock text. 3. By February 12, 2009, mail or email the midterm assignment to the instructor. If you choose to e-mail the midterm, please send it as a word processing document and not as a zip-file. 4. By February 19, 2009, read chapters 10, 11, 13, 14, 15 as well as 26, 27, 28, 31, 33, 34, 35, 43 and 56 of Sadock & Saddock. If you can manage to read the entire text, this would be advisable but not essential. Read chapters 6 through 11 of the Barlow text. 5. The instructor must have the completed final examination by 8 AM, the morning of February 25, 2009. Friday Delirium, dementia, amnestic disorder; HIV related problems; paranoia February 19, 2009 Schizophrenia Saturday Schizophrenia (cont.), other psychotic disorders, mood disorders, suicide, February 20, 2009 adjustment disorders, personality disorders, impulse control disordersSunday DBT for borderline personality disorder and other empirically validated February 21, 2009 treatments. Emergencies and disasters. Final Examination Grading All students are expected to turn in the midterm assignment on time. Class participation is expected. The final examination may consist of short-answers and essay questions. The essay questions should demonstrate the capacity to apply what was covered to real cases. The questions will be based on material covered in readings and class lecture.
