Estridge Ph D cestridge cbcag edu Spring 2007 COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE DESCRIPTION An investigation of the role of the Holy Spirit in the primitive Christian community The ministry of the Holy Spirit in the worship and interpersonal relations of Christians will be stressed Includes a special unit on the theology of the Church COURSE OBJECTIVES For the purpose of clarity and focus the learning objectives will be listed at the beginning of each unit By design the student is expected to comprehend the core knowledge presented in reading for this course On the graduate level students are expected to analyze the basic concepts so they can explain their meaning and apply them to contemporary life For your convenience the core objectives you should comprehend in your reading are listed below 1 Explain the role of the Holy Spirit in the early Christian community 2 Analyze the main contributions of New Testament writers to the development of Christian pneumatology 3 Integrate key hermeneutical and exegetical issues in addressing the current debate concerning New Testament perspectives on the work of the Spirit in interpersonal relationships 4 Develop a biblical basis for a Pentecostal understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the individual and of the Church today 5 Analyze the challenges and opportunities that await those anticipating Pentecostal METHODOLOGY The classes meet each Thursday night for five weeks 6 10 p m February 15 March 22 The course methodology will include group activities reacting to articles or chapters class discussion online chats lecture and critical reflection COURSE ASSIGNMENTS For each week of the course you will be expected to complete the assignments a set of readings prepare for class discussion and complete in class worksheets and group projects Weekly Readings The assigned readings will form the basis of our group discussions These assignments must be completed prior to each class session You should summarize your reading make note of key terms and concepts and a list of discussion questions based on the readings Bring summaries glossaries and questions to class to help in class discussions 2 Attendance and Participation Discussion will be a part of each class session Your participation in group activities and class discussions will be considered as a part of your course grade Since the class sessions are four hours each it is vital that you not be absent As much as 10 for class participation could increase or decrease your course grade If you miss two class periods you will be dropped from the course Short Written Assignments The written assignments should be completed before class and handed in before the class is over Each assignment should run from one to two typewritten pages and should conform to the following format requirements 12 point Times New Roman font 1 margins Double spaced The following identifying information should appear in single spaced format in the after the identifying information Short written assignments will be evaluated in terms of content scholarship style thoroughness and formal English within the pages allotted In Class Group Projects Each week certain projects will be done in class Some will be group projects or individual worksheets based on what is covered in class Others will be a one page summary of what you have learned or an application of certain concepts to contemporary society These assignments require your participation and cannot be completed outside of class You must be present to earn credit COURSE UNIT OBJECTIVES the OT manifestations of the H S who received the H S the purposes for the OT manifestations 2 Explain the Promise of the H S by John the Baptist the prophesy of the coming Messiah the promised Holy Spirit variations of the Greek text about John s prophesy 3 Compare and analyze the various passages where Jesus promises the Holy Spirit compare the Synoptic passages to John analyze the similarities and differences rank the significance of these promises 4 Design a model showing the implications of the fulfillment of the promised outpouring 3 Unit Requirements for February 15 2007 1 Read Gordon
