Course Information LS 2 Section 2: Cells, Tissues, and Organs Instructor: Debra Pires Office Hours: R 11-1 and F 12-1 Schlicter Hall 2877 [email protected], phone 825-0376 Course Website: http://www.lsic.ucla.edu/classes/ Lab Website: http://lslab.lscore.ucla.edu Text: Life, The Science of Biology by Sadava, Heller, Orians, Purves, and Hillis 8th ed. Lectures: TR 8:00 – 9:15, LaKretz 110 Lectures will be based on the reading listed in this syllabus. There will be additional examples given in the class that may not be from the text, but are chosen to help in understanding different concepts in the course. Lectures will be posted on the course website the night before so that you can print them out and bring them to class if you choose. If they are not posted by 9 PM the night before I will make copies and they will be given to you before lecture. Laboratory: There will be five meetings for the laboratory portion of the course. The labs consist of the following exercises: 1. Probability Lab and the Scientific method Week 1 2. Exploring photosynthesis Week 3 3. Metabolism Week 5 4. Rat Dissection Week 7 5. Histology Week 9 Check your course listing to make sure that you are going to the right laboratory/discussion room. You must attend the section in which you are enrolled. If there is an extenuating circumstance and you must attend another section once, then you must discuss this with your TA and the TA of the section you would like to attend before you go to the alternate section. There are no make-up sections. Discussion Sections: Discussions will be held during weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. Readings will be posted on Blackboard for you to print out and read. In addition, there will be a set of questions, or a small write-up that you will be responsible for completing and turning in at the beginning of each discussion section. These sections are mandatory, and points will be awarded for attendance, the completed assignment, and exercises you will complete during discussion section. Exams and Review Sessions: We will have a review session before each midterm and the final. Dr. Pires will be the one present for the review sessions and they are question and answer format. You must arrive with questions, and I will answer your question. (Just to clarify: Simply reading a question from the study guide is not asking a question.) Room reservations and review times are still pending and you will be notified in class and via e-mail of the room and time for each review. You have two midterms for the course. Both midterms and your final are held in the evenings, so please plan accordingly. You must take the exams at the scheduled time and date as there are no make-up exams. Fail to appear, hand in, or take an exam will result in a zero for that exam. There are no exceptions to this policy.Enrollment: All questions related to enrollment should be taken to the LS Core office in the Life Sciences building room 2305. Grading: Material for the exams will be taken from lectures, the text, assigned readings, and problems that have been discussed in class. There will be both multiple choice and short answer questions on the exam. The exams will cover all material in the labs and discussion as well as all lectures up to the exam date. Grades will follow a straight scale. If the overall class average is below 75% then the overall grades will be curved. An answer key for exams will be available during my office hours and the TAs office hours. You can refer to them if you wish, this is optional. Once the second midterm has been administered, the first midterm will no longer be available for viewing. The second midterm is available for viewing until noon on the Friday of 10th week. If you would like to see a copy of your scantron results then you must request a printout from the Core Office. You can pick-up your printout 24 hours after you have made your request. Midterm 1: Thursday January 29th 5 – 6:50 PM Midterm 2: Thursday February 26th 5 – 6:50 PM Final Exam: Wednesday March 18th 6:30 – 9:30 PM Regrading policy: Any request for a regrade must be made within one week of the exam being returned to you. If you think there has been a simple addition error on your exam then write a note explaining which page was added incorrectly, attach this to the front of the exam and turn it into the your TA. If you think there was an error in grading that is not an addition error then write a brief note explaining why you think more points should be awarded, attach this to the front of the exam and turn it into your TA at the end of discussion. In the event that you do turn in your exams, and it is determined that you have altered your answer you will receive a zero on the exam and you will be reported immediately to the office of the Dean of Students. All exam regrades will be done at the end of the quarter after we have calculated final grades. If the points you request will affect your final grade then we will reevaluate the exam to look for grading errors. Reading Quizzes: There will be a quiz administered using Blackboard every Wednesday beginning in Week 2 and ending in Week 10 They are available for a limited time (6AM-7PM) on Wednesdays. Each quiz is worth 10 points. These quizzes are based on the previous week’s reading. They are only available for a limited time, you must login and take the quiz before it times out. Reading quizzes are open book, and they are designed to help you look over the material and review what we have covered in the previous week. The quizzes will be posted at: http://www.lsic.ucla.edu/ You are expected to work alone. You will have the least number of hassles if you follow a few basic rules: DO NOT 1. use a wireless connection 2. open the quiz and then walk away to make dinner 3. open any other webpages 4. use the “Back” button 5. logout and then log back in again. Once you begin a quiz, you must complete the quiz. Once you have answered a question you cannot go back and change your answer. If something legitimate does happen and you are “kicked off” the site, then e-mail me immediately (only one e-mail please) and I will restart your quiz as soon as I can. If you have e-mailed me asking for help, then it behooves you to check your e-mail for my reply. In my reply I will let you know I have restarted your quiz.Point Breakdown: Midterm 1 175
