Course content has application to formal and non-formal educational settings with diverse audiences. VALUED ENDS FOR THE COURSE: Professionals who: 1. Implement a critical science perspective in their professional practice with emphasis on what should be done about…? Social issues impacting individuals, families and communities through the evaluation of various historical perspectives of FCS Education. 2. Apply a variety of research-based teaching methods to various formal and informal FCS-related educational settings to effect change in learners’ lives. 3. Relate the models of teaching featured by Moore in the text, Effective Instructional Strategies (2005), to educational settings. 4. Reflect on their experiences as family and consumer sciences (FCS) professionals (reflective/critical thinking). TO MEET THE VALUED ENDS FOR THE COURSE, FCS 461 STUDENTS SHOULD: • Critically read, reflect and synthesize various sources of research-based theories, philosophies and strategies associated with education in general and FCS specifically. • Participate in thought-provoking discussion guided by questions formatted using the critical science approach (IE what should be done about the contexts in which we teach and work today?) • Complete and email assignments by assignment due dates as given on the course syllabus unless prior permission has been obtained from the instructor to vary from these dates. Assignments submitted late without a justifiable reason will receive a lower grade than those submitted on time. • Develop lesson plans emphasizing a practical perennial problem for identified research-based teaching strategy. • Communicate any problems and concerns regarding course content and assignments to the instructor prior to the assignment and/or exam due dates. Idaho Core Teacher Standards and Idaho Foundation Standards for Professional-Technical Teachers MET BY FCS 461:Standards 1. Assistance—the teacher knows of community agencies and organizations that provide assistance to individuals and families. 3. Interpersonal Relationships—the teacher understands how interpersonal relationships, cultural patterns, and diversity impact individuals, families, community and the workplace. 10. Careers—the teacher understands the nature of the profession and knows of careers related to family and consumer sciences. Disposition 1. The teacher appreciates the value of family and consumer sciences education programs for students, families and the community. Performance: 1. The teacher demonstrates a command of instructional methodology in the delivery of family and consumer sciences content at the middle school and secondary school levels. 2. The teacher integrates student leadership organizations (FCCLA—Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) into the family and consumer sciences curriculum. With the critical science approach to curriculum development in mind, design lesson plans for students in formal or informal FCS educational settings.2. Evaluate methods for achieving learning goals and choose various teaching strategies, materials, and technologies to meet instructional purposes and student needs. 3. Use multiple teaching and learning strategies to engage students in learning (both in formal and informal FCS educational settings). 4. Use a variety of instructional tools and resources (e.g., computers, audio- visual technologies, new technologies, local experts, primary documents and artifacts, texts, reference books, literature, and other print documents).5. Design a classroom management plan that maximizes class productivity by organizing, allocating, and managing the resources of time, space, and activities and by clearly communicating curriculum goals and objectives.6. Develop a personal philosophy of Family and Consumer Sciences Education. In order to achieve the Learning Outcomes for FCS 461, students should:1.
