Updated: 7/2011 1 COURSE OUTLINE ENGL 086/087 Combined Academic Advanced Reading, Writing and Grammar for ESL Students 6 Credits HOWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE Description ENGL-086/087 Combined is a fully integrated approach to teaching reading, composition, and grammar. Emphasis is placed on reading comprehension, vocabulary development, critical analysis, reading rate, and the composition of clear, organized, grammatically correct assignments. By responding to information and concepts from a diversity of assigned materials, students will develop a global awareness. Prerequisite: Appropriate score on English placement tests or successful completion of ENGL 083 and/or 084. Co-requisite: FYEX-100. Overall Course Objectives for Reading Students will develop their ability to read, analyze and respond to varied reading genres (appropriate for advanced learners of English), including selections with diverse global perspectives. Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate literal and inferential comprehension of assigned readings both orally and in writing. a. Identify the topic and main idea of a reading passage. b. List details used to support the main idea and draw logical conclusions. c. Summarize and outline assigned readings. d. Apply inferencing skills to identify unstated meanings, implications and tone. e. Attain 70% or higher comprehension while increasing reading rate by 80 words per minute. 2. Demonstrate comprehension of an expanded college-level vocabulary. a. Define an unknown word or idiom using the context. b. Identify prefixes, roots and suffixes and their meanings. c. Identify word forms and recognize collocations. d. Use an assigned set of vocabulary words appropriately in practice exercises and student-generated sentences. 3. Read an assigned fiction or non-fiction book and use critical thinking skills to analyze and respond to related topics. 4. Compose individual oral and written responses to varied reading selections, several of which contain global themes. 5. Participate in class discussion of assigned readings. Major Topics I. Critical reading skills, such as assessment of purpose, bias, and tone V. Information literacyUpdated: 7/2011 2 Overall Course Objectives for Writing Students will develop their ability to write successful compositions that reflect an appropriate degree of mastery of the English language. Upon successfully completing this course students will be able to: 1. Write successful narrative, descriptive, expository and argumentative compositions that reflect critical analysis--at least one of which integrates themes from 086 readings. 2. Employ all aspects of the writing process to generate, organize and develop ideas and to revise written work. 3. Employ the rules of academic essay formatting. 4. Write compositions focused on main ideas that are unified, coherent and adequately developed with supporting information. 5. Write introductions that lead to a clear thesis statement and indicate mode of development of a composition. 6. Write body paragraphs that develop the main idea stated in the thesis statement. 7. Write conclusions that bring a composition to an end. 8. Use assigned 086 vocabulary words appropriately in compositions. 9. Compose complex and correctly structured sentences that contain a variety of phrases and clauses. 10. Use the English verb system effectively. 11. Demonstrate correct use of the parts of speech. 12. Use the rules of grammar and the techniques of revision to organize and present ideas in written communication so that they are clearly stated and can be easily understood by a U.S. audience. Information literacy Course Requirements While individual faculty members will determine the specific components of class grades, students may be graded on the following: 086 087 Lab Activities Lab Activities Reading Assignments and Quizzes In Class Writing (at least 40% of grade) Midterm Exam Grammar and Editing Quizzes Finals Exam Writing Assignments and Homework Final Exam Students receive a separate grade for 086 and 087. Other Course Information This course is non-transferable. Students, however, receive college credit upon successful
