Emphasis will be placed on the following skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.Textbook:Conversational SpanishManual for Spanish 1-2The First Thousand Words in SpanishRequired Equipment and/or Supplies:1 CDPurposes or Goals of the Course:1. to understand a non-technical lecture or reading2. to participate in a discussion or interview in everyday idiomatic Spanish3. to understand the syntactical structure of Spanish4. to recognize the sounds of spoken Spanish5. to articulate sounds to communicate in Spanish1CLASS INFORMATION SHEET6. to demonstrate an understanding of the written word and its meaning7. identify various aspects of the culture2CLASS INFORMATION SHEETObligation of the Student:THIS COURSE REQUIRES A MINIMUM OF 3 HOURS PER WEEK FOR EACH UNIT OF CREDIT, EXCLUDING CLASS TIME. (California State Education Code: Title V, Section 55002)1. Anyone absent the first three days of class will be dropped.2. Proper registration in this class is the responsibility of the student. IF ASTUDENT WISHES TO DROP THE COURSE, IT IS HIS/HER RESPONSIBILITY TO DO SO.3. In class the student is expected to observe the general rules of conduct as specified in the student handbook.4. Your name/date, class hour, ASSIGNMENT, and Spanish 1 must be on the upper right hand corner of your work or IT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. There is NO make up work. There are NO make up tests. After the first midterm, the lowest quiz grade will be dropped.5. Students who are absent will not be allowed to turn in homework or take the quiz, exam, or midterm if one is given on the day of the absence and will receive a grade of zero. NO MAKE-UPS ARE GIVEN. (POLICES & PROCEDURE 6401 E 4.)6. YOU MUST BE READY TO BEGIN WORKING ON TIME and bring your books, pencils and pens in order to earn the participation (5%) points. Be fully present in class by answering questions and participating in all activities. You will lose all points for the day if you do any of the following: arrive late or leave early for any reason except jury duty or school sponsored event. send text messages or answer your cell phone in class. do not have your materials. do anything else that does not involve learning Spanish!7. I expect the student to engage in the learning process as an active participant. If you are absent, YOU are strongly advised to call a classmate and obtain any missed information. The first option is a visit to the Diego Rivera Theater (10) at City College of San Francisco and Coit Tower (10) in San Francisco. No points are given for any work done without the instructor’s prior authorization. Other options will be announced as they arise.General Guidelines:1. The dictations (songs) should be handwritten and presented in rough form.2. Everyone must take the final. Anyone not present at the final without prior authorization will receive an F grade on the final.3. Quizzes will be graded according to the following system:a. Each quiz has a 100 point value,b. 2 or more points off for any spelling or punctuation,c. 3 points off for accents left out or incorrectly included.4. Keep your work.
