Attendance Attendance is strongly advised. Class Lectures and Activities are designed to help you succeed in this class. Students are expected to attend class regularly and participate in class discussions and activities. You will be tested on information learned in class that may not be available in the written material. Experience shows that there is a strong correlation between regular attendance and class performance. If you miss class, it is your responsibility to obtain the notes from a classmate. Mandatory Classes: All students are required to attend Class on days when we have a Guest Speaker. All Guest Speakers will be announced, at least, one week prior to class via class announcements and eLC. If you fail to attend a class when we have a Guest Speaker, one point will be deducted from your final grade for each missed speaker. You are also required to attend class when we have an Exam. Please see the Exam section for further information. 5. Participation: Quizzes, Activities, & Assignments for extra credit: At various points in the semester, there will be quizzes (often unannounced), activities, and assignments. To receive credit, you must complete the quizzes, activities, and assignments when they are due. Most of these opportunities will be in class, some will be in ELC, and some will be outside of class. For in-class assignments and quizzes, you must attend your scheduled class time to receive the extra credit. Therefore, I recommend that you regularly attend the class time for which you are enrolled. 6. Exams: The course has three exams during the regular semester. During finals week, we will have a comprehensive final exam. If you are satisfied with your grade on the first three exams, you do not have to take the comprehensive final exam. Exams will test your knowledge as well as your ability to apply the knowledge, think critically, and apply analytical skills. Historically, students have found the exams to be more difficult than expected. Therefore, I strongly suggest that you attend class regularly and participate. 7. Average Exam Grade: Your Average Exam Grade will be the highest score based on three methods that are illustrated below: EX 1: Scores of 75, 65, 80, and 78 (final exam) Method 1: Average of first three exams (75+65+80)/3 = 73.3 Method 2: Final Exam Score (78) replaces lowest exam score 75+78+80)/3 = 77.7 ***Will use Method #2*** EX 2: Scores of 90, 80, 0, and 81 (final exam) Method 1: Average of first three exams (90+80+0)/3 = 56.7 Method 2: Final Exam Score (81) replaces lowest exam score (90+80+81)/3 = 83.7 *** Will use Method #2.*** EX 3: Scores of 90, 80, 70, and 65 (final exam) Method 1: Average of first three exams (90+80+70)/3 = 80 ***** Method 2: Final Exam Score (65) replaces lowest exam score (90+80+65)/3 = 78.3 ***Will use Method #1.***RMIN 4000 2014 Page | 3 NOTE: The final exam average will be computed based upon THREE exam scores. There will be no make-up Exams. If you miss an exam for any reason, you will be required to take the cumulative final exam. If you miss more than one exam, you will not be able to pass the class. 8. Course Grade Options: Your final grade in this course will be determined by one of the following options: Option A: Average of 3 highest Exam Grades – 100% Option B*: Average of 3 highest Exam Grades – 95%; Current Events Essay – 5% Option C*: Average of 3 highest Exam Grades – 90%; Current Events Presentation – 10% *Specific instructions on Options B & C are included on page 5 of the Syllabus. *NOTE: Option C will only be available to a maximum of 10 students.
