is a general plan for the course deviations announced to the class by the instructor may be necessary 1 Course Description Introduction to risk identification risk evaluation and risk treatment methods Consideration is given to both business and personal risks with an emphasis on insurance as a risk management tool This course is designed for non major as well as a basis for more advanced courses in Risk Management Insurance 2 Course Materials Rejda 11th Ed 2010 Principles of Risk Management and Insurance Addison Wesley R Supplemental readings and documents available from the class eLearning Commons page eLC 3 Course Objectives Teach the principles and terminology of insurance and risk management Explain how individuals and corporations use the risk management process to control or finance their exposure to accidental loss Describe the job opportunities available in the insurance and financial services industry Illustrate the principles and theories of insurance law using some of the most widely purchased insurance policies including personal automobile and life insurance Discuss both ethical and global business issues as they relate to the insurance transaction Build a foundation of understanding so that some of our society s most important economic problems can be viewed intelligently Page 1 RMIN 4000 2014 4 Attendance Attendance is strongly advised Class Lectures and Activities are designed to help you succeed in this class Students are expected to attend class regularly and participate in class discussions and activities You will be tested on information learned in class that may not be available in the written material Experience shows that there is a strong correlation between regular attendance and class performance If you miss class it is your responsibility to obtain the notes from a classmate Mandatory Classes All students are required to attend Class on days when we have a Guest Speaker All Guest Speakers will be announced at least one week prior to class via class announcements and eLC If you fail to attend a class when we have a Guest Speaker one point will be deducted from your final grade for each missed speaker You are also required to attend class when we have an Exam Please see the Exam section for further information 5 Participation Quizzes Activities Assignments for extra credit At various points in the semester there will be quizzes often unannounced activities and assignments To receive credit you must complete the quizzes activities and assignments when they are due Most of these opportunities will be in class some will be in ELC and some will be outside of class For in class assignments and quizzes you must attend your scheduled class time to receive the extra credit Therefore I recommend that you regularly attend the class time for which you are enrolled 6 Exams The course has three exams during the regular semester During finals week we will have a comprehensive final exam If you are satisfied with your grade on the first three exams you do not have to take the comprehensive final exam Exams will test your knowledge as well as your ability to apply the knowledge think critically and apply analytical skills Historically students have found the exams to be more difficult than expected Therefore I strongly suggest that you attend class regularly and participate 7 Average Exam Grade Your Average Exam Grade will be the highest score based on three methods that are illustrated below EX 1 Scores of 75 65 80 and 78 final exam Method 1 Average of first three exams 75 65 80 3 73 3 Method 2 Final Exam Score 78 replaces lowest exam score 75 78 80 3 77 7 Will use Method 2 EX 2 Scores of 90 80 0 and 81 final exam Method 1 Average of first three exams 90 80 0 3 56 7 Method 2 Final Exam Score 81 replaces lowest exam score 90 80 81 3 83 7 Will use Method 2 EX 3 Scores of 90 80 70 and 65 final exam Method 1 Average of first three exams 90 80 70 3 80 Method 2 Final Exam Score 65 replaces lowest exam score 90 80 65 3 78 3 Will use Method 1 Page 2 RMIN 4000 2014 NOTE The final exam average will be computed based upon THREE exam scores There will be no make up Exams If you miss an exam for any reason you will be required to take the cumulative final exam If you miss more than one exam you will not be able to pass the class 8 Course Grade Options Your final grade in this course will be determined by one of the following options Option A Average of 3 highest Exam Grades 100 Option B Average of 3 highest Exam Grades 95 Current Events Essay 5 Option C Average of 3 highest Exam Grades 90 Current Events Presentation 10 Specific instructions on Options B C are included on page 5 of the Syllabus NOTE Option C will only be available to a maximum of 10 students If you are interested please see me as soon as possible The Option will be granted on a first come first serve basis Once you select this option you must present to the class on the agreed upon date 9 Grade Scale Be aware that the plus minus system implemented by the Board of Regents is in effect The baseline grading scale will be as follows A 93 100 A 90 92 9 B 87 89 9 B 84 86 9 B 80 83 9 C 77 79 9 C 74 76 9 C 70 73 9 D 60 69 F Below 60 Note Letter grades will be assigned in strict accordance to the grading scale above Grades will not be rounded You have the opportunity to improve your grade by extra credit opportunities assigned in class and or completing a current events project You may also take the optional final exam as an opportunity to improve your exam score 10 eLearning Commons
