Daniel H. Garrison Chambers Murray Latin-English Dictionary (recommended) (selections from Lucretius will be Xeroxed and distributed from the edition of G. E. Benfield and R. C. Reeves (OUP 1967) This course is designed to increase students’ knowledge of forms, vocabulary, meter and poetic style through readings in the poetry of Catullus and Lucretius. In addition, we will have occasion to study the cultural events that form the background for poets writing during the late Republic. Students are required to complete the assigned readings and to participate in discussion (15% of grade) and to memorize one poem of Catullus, or selection of Lucretius, of at least five lines. Each student will be assigned a poem or selection for class presentation. Students are expected to demonstrate control of the grammar, content, allusions, meter, background, etc. of the assigned passage. There will be two exams during the semester and a final exam. Non-graded quizzes may be given at my discretion.
