Family theories are explored. Students examine variables that influence the health of families. Students conduct a family assessment, identify strengths and health concerns, and develop a plan for family health promotion activities. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Describe how nursing approaches for working with families differ from those used with individuals. 2. Discuss theories relevant to family nursing. 3. Explore factors influencing families’ health at different stages of development. 4. Describe influences of culture and society on the health of families. 5. Explore ethical principles related to care of families. 6. Examine the relationship between health status and family functioning. 7. Describe nursing interventions to promote the health of families in different life stages. 8. ESSENTIAL CONTENT: Systems Theory Family Theories Family Development Family Structure and Function Family Interviewing Process Family Assessment Anticipatory Guidance Family Transitions Diversity Ethics Family Care Giving Family Health Promotion Genetics and Genomics2TEACHING/LEARNING ACTIVITIES: Lectures, discussion, group work, presentations, audiovisuals, role-playing, clinical experiences COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Clinical - 16 hours Guidelines for Family Selection 1. A family is defined as two or more people who have daily verbal communication. 2. All family members consent to video taping of the health promotion project. 3. Close family members or other students should not be used as the family selected. 4. Instructor must approve the family selected. Assignments: Family Assessment: This is a comprehensive family assessment which involves interviewing, interaction, observation, and gathering data for analysis. This will include a Genogram. See written guidelines Health Promotion Project: The student will identify family health promotion needs based upon the family assessment and directed towards the family’s developmental stage and health promotion needs. A health promotion project will then be designed and will be written, videotaped, and implemented with the family. Students will evaluate the effectiveness of the health promotion plan. See written guidelines Conferences: Conferences may be planned with the instructor to supervise and guide the students in the family work. Paper: Students will develop a 4-6 page APA format paper on a topic pertinent to family integrity and health. The paper should contain information on the topic as it pertains to the United States and to at least one other country. At least five current scholarly references should be used. The paper should be typed, double spaced, with correct grammar, spelling, and organization. Presentation: Students will give a short presentation on their paper topic to the class. The paper and presentation must be a different topic than the health promotion topic. Note: All written assignments must be typed and double spaced. Use complete sentences and correct grammar.3Classroom Behavior: Cell phones and pagers: These devices are to be in the “Off” or “Vibrate” mode during class. If you must be on call during class, please sit close to the door so disruption may be minimized when you leave to answer a page. Participation: Students are expected to participate in the class discussions. Respect for other opinions is expected. Clinical Requirements Students must have ALL required information for clinical (license, TB, immunizations, drug screen, background check, BCLS or SCLS, and confidentiality statement [signed annually each school year]). Additionally, competency on the Clinical Orientation Exam, (if clinical is in a hospital in any capacity) must be on file in the nursing office before beginning any clinical. Failure to submit any of the documentation may result in withdrawal from the course or a grade of “F” for assignments. Academic Honesty Policy – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: The following behaviors are prohibited: Cheating- Using or attempting to use crib sheets, instant messaging, electronic sources, stolen exams, unauthorized study aids in an academic assignment or copying or colluding with a fellow student in an effort to improve one’s grades. Fabricating- Falsifying, inventing, or misstating any data, information, of citation in an academic assignment, field experience, academic credentials, or other manner. Plagiarism- Using the works of another person as one’s own words without proper citation in any academic assignment. This includes submission of any work purchased or down loaded from a web site or the internet. It is imperative that all work that is not original be correctly cited. Use quotation marks and page numbers where appropriate. You must give credit for any work that is not your own. Plagiarism, in any form, is not acceptable Facilitating Academic Dishonesty- Assisting or attempting to assist any person to commit any act of academic misconduct, such as allowing someone else to copy a paper or test answers. Submitting a paper or project that has been written (in whole or in part) by someone else, or that you have submitted as a requirement for another class is prohibited. In suspected cases of academic dishonesty, appropriate consequences will be determined. If there is suspicion of plagiarism, papers may be submitted to Turnitin.4EVALUATION: Note: Attendance is expected at all classes. The final course grade will be lowered proportionately for absences, late arrivals or early departures. A student who misses more than one scheduled class may not be able to meet course objectives. The final grade in the course will be determined as follows: Attendance and Participation in Class Activities 15% Paper 25% Presentation of Topic 10% Family Assessment 30% Health Promotion with Family 20% Grading Scale: 93-100 A, A- 85-92 B+, B, B- 76-84
