Course Description : MEA 101 is designed to explore the processes by which the Earth has reached its present state and is changing to reach new states. Catastrophic processes include earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Ordinary processes include soil formation and water flow. Web Site : Videotaped previews of the midterm and final exam will be available at our Web site, i.e., { http://courses.ncsu.edu/mea101/common/media/media.html }. Copies of past exams, are available at { http://courses.ncsu.edu/mea101/common/media/index.html } along with their answers. Those who live near campus may visit the Video Rental Department downstairs in the main (Cates Avenue) outlet for the NCSU Bookstore. Before coming to the Bookstore to obtain the DVD's, please call (919) 515-3479 to be sure that they have stock-on-hand. If travel to the NCSU campus is inconvenient, please contact Tuyen Tran, DELTA Coordinator for the NCSU Bookstore. An email message would be the best way to make contact {[email protected]}. Otherwise, one may call (919) 515-3479 or fax (919) 515-2618. Any student who does not have access to a DVD player may contact the NCSU Distance Education Office for assistance. Just google “Real Player” to find the appropriate URL. Although these DVD’s should play on any computer, they typically will not play on a stand-alone DVD player that is connected to a television. The photographs and line drawings used in the videotaped lectures may be found by selecting "Lecture Notes" at the course URL: { http://courses.ncsu.edu/mea101/common/media/index.html }. This Syllabus: This syllabus is long and complicated because you are being offered an exceptional degree of choice in this course and it takes a lot of space to explain those choices. Textbook: There is a required text and recommended optional books by the instructor. You may choose either or both optional texts written by the instructor. Both are useful for homework. The first is Kimberley, M.M., 2009, Discussing Oceans: Wiley & Sons, New York, 305 p., ISBN = 978-0470-39177-8. The second book by the instructor is Kimberley, M.M., 2008, Discussing Earth: Wiley and Sons, New York, 358 p., ISBN = 978-0470-18501-8. Both books carry a DVD with a seven-hour movie on it. The - 1 -Syllabus for MEA 101-601 in Summer Session 2 of 2009 Kimberley books are available in most Raleigh bookstores (about $37 new and $28 used). The other text is some recent edition of "Dynamic Earth" by B.J. Skinner et al., available on-line. Some of these on-line copies will become sold-out as we get into the summer semester, and then they will become a few times more expensive than they are initially. The latest edition is Skinner, B.J., Porter, S.C., and Park, J., 2004, The Dynamic Earth, 5th ed.: Wiley and Sons, New York, 575 p. (about $90 in bookstores if used; new copies are no longer available). However, either the 3rd or 4th editions of Skinner would be equally useful. All of these books are available on-line but the prices vary daily. One of the three acceptable editions of the Skinner book (3rd, 4th, or 5th ed.) typically may be obtained for less than $10 if you shop diligently. However, one must be careful that one is ordering the textbook rather than a study guide for the Skinner book. If uncertain, you may cut-and-paste the URL for your prospective textbook into an email that you send to the instructor ([email protected]). At eBay, a useful URL is … { http://product.half.ebay.com/Dynamic-Earth_W0QQprZ880177QQtgZinfo } Here, the third edition usually sells for just a few dollars. The fourth edition typically costs less than $10: { http://product.half.ebay.com/Dynamic-Earth_W0QQprZ1645818QQtgZinfo }. The most recent (fifth) edition is not much more useful but is more expensive, about $30 at eBay: { http://product.half.ebay.com/Dynamic-Earth-by-Brian-J-Skinner-Jeffrey-Park-Stephen-C-Porter-2003_W0QQprZ2316033QQtgZinfo }. Inexpensive copies are also available from Amazon.com. Just search for “Dynamic Earth Skinner”. You do not need the CD with the Skinner text. NCSU offers on-line ordering of both the Kimberley and Skinner textbooks at the following URL: { http://ncsu.collegestoreonline.com/ePOS#currentdept }. A set of course lectures is available on DVD’s at the Media Center of D.H. Hill Library (Erdahl-Cloyd wing). Course notes are provided on the course Web site. The course is organized according to those posted course notes. The correspondence among the Kimberley lectures and the Skinner chapters is shown in Table 1 for each of the three Skinner editions (3rd ed. = S3) (4 th ed. = S4) and (5th ed. = S5). Table 1.
