POLISCI 207 Jan 28 2013 Texas is NOT a typical state We are second largest and largest in population Texas Per Capita Income of 2012 was between 40 000 45 000 The term Per Capita includes ALL age groups even children This could lead to a low Per Capita income due to the increased number of children Ex Utah Texas California New York Florida have the largest populations Texas is 94 98 urban California Texas and Arizona have the largest Non Citizen Populations does not include illegals but people with Visa s to live in the states Unemployment rate in highest in California Nevada Georgia New Jersey Maryland and the Carolina s at 9 0 13 0 The southern states and through the Rust Belt populations have the least well being Life expectancy is in a direct correlation with the wellbeing of states Women typically live longer than men due to the fact that they are willing to ask for help especially within the medical field Women are more social and typically have more friends which helps to prolong your life Men exhibit more risky behavior The broken bones and the hits take their toll on the men s bodies Married people also live longer due to the social aspect of the marriage and the interactions Japan has the highest life expectancy due to their multigenerational households Hong Kong has a very large life expectancy because there is a tonnnn of social interaction The day begins with a morning of Tai Chi and then more and more time with people all day long Playing Mahjong also helps to keep Alzheimer s away Single women live longer than married women and married men live longer than single men Studies show that married men who listen to their wives more often have shown to be more successful than those who don t This is due to the fact that marriage gives a man someone to talk to and someone to bounce their ideas off of Poverty is highest in the South and the Rust Belt Louisiana and Mississippi are the worst Welfare qualification levels are highest in Michigan Alaska Hawaii and Virginia These states qualification limits are up to 2 000 a month In Texas if you make more than 401 dollars a month you do not qualify for assistance California and New York have the highest amount of money qualified for Texas is at 249 a month The Northern States have a higher rate for High School Graduation than the south As well as College Property Crimes Burglary Vandalism Etc are highest throughout the South and in Washington Texas has the most executions since 1976 at more than 500 The second state is at 110 The error rate of execution is at 2 5 The Governor of Illinois about 20 years ago began pardoning people who were set to death because the error rates were too high This was highly attributed to the Innocence Project This is a process by which Law Students are taking old cases and presenting new evidence to the Judges and helping get the innocent people out of jail The death penalty actually costs more than life in prison This is due to the excessive court processes to verify that they are guilty Oklahoma and Texas have the highest executions per million people Death Row Inmates per million are highest in Florida Georgia Alabama Oklahoma Arizona and Nevada The Infant Mortality rates per 1000 live births are MUCH higher in the southern states than anywhere else This is in direct correlation with the poverty levels State and Local Govt Tax Burden in NY NJ CT RI at over 11 to 13 Texas comes in at 7 9 The South along with Utah have the highest Religious rates The Northeast has the lowest Chapter 2 Cause and Effect does not work in social sciences We don t have definitive reasons only theories Statistical techniques are used to depict the relationship between two things
