Look for my name over the door. • Class Website: engr.sjsu.edu/epeterson A. Course Description: This course is an advanced study of issues related to airport management. At the conclusion of this class, the students will have a better understanding of: 1. The relationship between airlines and airports; 2. Daily airport operations including ground operations, passenger flow management, baggage handling and cargo operations; 3. Issues related to noise, environment and relationship with the community; 4. Airport safety and security issues; 5. The most updated airports issues related to capacity, delay, efficiency, finance and administration B. Prerequisites: Aviation 78 C. Course Requirements, Percent of Grade, and Tentative Due Dates Assignment Percent of Grade Due Date 1. Class Assignments 25% weekly 2. Midterm Exam 20% 03/19/08 3. Commission Meeting Reports (2) 15% 05/01/08 4. Group Presentation 15% 3. Final Exam 25% 05/21/08 17:15 *Due dates are subject to change with course progression F. Grading Method Grades will be based on the percentage of total points earned in the class: A: 90-100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: below 69% G. Late Papers or Assignments • Missing an in-class examination or assignment due date will result in a grade of zero for that assignment. H. Makeup Exams There will be no makeup exam. If a student has a written medical excuse for missing an exam, the percentage earned on the final will be substituted for the missed exam. If a student does not have a written medical excuse, the student will receive a zero for the missed exam. I. Format for submitting documents All commission reports and/or research papers shall conform to APA format. Please also not the following requirements: 9 Double spaced 9 12 pt font 9 Time New Roman font (or equivalent) 9 Your name and student ID should be on the top left corner of each page 9 Include page numbers in the footer 9 Include a bibliography Submit documents electronically as an Acrobat PDF document. Unless otherwise instructed, all documents must be submitted electronically in an Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Generally Acrobat Reader will not convert document to a PDF, but there are many free converters available on-line. You may also choose to purchase the full version of Adobe Acrobat in the bookstore, utilize one of the computer labs on campus, or check with your classmates. Documents shall either be emailed to me by the deadline (email to [email protected]) or brought to class on some sort of portable media. If you submit your assignment on a thumb-drive/memory stick/etc,AVIA 179 – SYLLABUS Spring 2008 Page 4 of 5 please write your name on outside of the drive/stick. I will collect them and return them at the next class meeting. J. Descriptions of Assignments/Exams Exams: Exams may include a combination of essay, multiple choice, fill-in and short answer questions and will be based on the reading assignments and course material. In Class Presentation: You will be provided with a handout describing the presentation requirements and how it will be graded. Commission Meeting Reports: You will need to attend one meeting for each of the following commissions and provide a one to two page report on each detailing the topics discussed and their effect on airport management. Reports may be submitted at any time but must be turned in no later than 9:00 AM on May 01, 2008.
