Math 251:507 Course Syllabus Instructor: David Manuel Office Hours: Official hours M 3-5pm, TRF 2:00-3:30pm OBAContact Points: Office: BLOC 601J e-mail: [email protected] OR [email protected] Page: http://www.math.tamu.edu/~dmanuel/Main Office Phone #: 845-3261 (last resort ONLY)Course Name: Engineering Math IIICourse Description: Vector algebra, calculus of functions of several variables, partial derivatives, directional derivatives, gradient, multiple integration, line and surface integrals, Green’s and Stokes’ theorems.Required Texts: Stewart, Calculus: Early Vectors, Preliminary Edition Meeting Times/Locations: The lecture meets Tues/Thurs !!:10-12:25 in HELD 107Prerequisite: MATH 152 or equivalentCalculator Policy: Calculators WILL be allowed on all exams and assignments, but sufficient analytic work must be shown to receive full credit. Calculators will be checked for useful stored formulas during exams.Course Objectives: This course is to provide students with quantitative and problem-solving skills of integral calculus, power series, and 3-D vectors. At the conclusion of this course, students should be able to:I. Visualize surfaces in 3-dimensional space.II. Know techniques of partial differentiation and apply them to a variety of applications, includingengineering applications.III. Know techniques of double and triple integrals and apply them to a variety of applications,including engineering applications.IV. Compute and visualize line and surface integrals and apply theorems related to them in a variety ofapplications, including engineering applications.Grading Policy:3 exams = 300 points A = 630-700Online HW = 100 points B = 560-629Take-home quizzes= 100 points C = 490-559Final = 200 points D = 420-489Total = 700 points F = 0-419 Attendance: Attendance of lectures is important. If you must miss class on days something is to be turned in, please contact me as soon as you know. I suggest you find a study partner or two to get notes on days you have to miss. Completed notes will be posted on my web page IF you do not use these as a substitute to attending class. Make-up Policy: If you miss an exam, you must contact me within 48 hours. Exams must be made up within 30 calendar days and require appropriate documentation of a university-excused absence. Make-up policy for quizzes is discussed below. Scholastic Dishonesty: Remember the Aggie Code of Honor: An Aggie does not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do! There will be many opportunities for you to work together in an appropriate manner. However, each student is responsible for turning in their own unique work. During exams, you are not allowed to receive any kind of assistance from anyone (OR have any useful formulas stored on your calculator!). Any instance of scholastic dishonesty will be handled according to the processes outlined on the Honor Code website at http://aggiehonor.tamu.edu/Faculty/WhatToDo.aspx.Expectations: I expect you to have read the material and stepped through the examples before class, and I expect you to treat me with respect. You can expect me to be prompt and consistent in grading and treat you with respect. Weekly Schedule: The (tentative) weekly schedule is posted on the MATH 251 course homepage at http://www.math.tamu.edu/courses/math251/currentsched.html Exams: Dates for the exams are Thursday 29 Sep, Tuesday 25 Oct, and Thursday 1 Dec during class. Tentative content of each exam is available at the weekly schedule linked aboveFinal Exam: A comprehensive final exam will be given in HELD 109 on Monday 12 Dec 8:00am-10:00am. These problems are for practice and will not be handed in; however, quiz and exam questions may be similar to suggested homework problems. (NOTE: If you purchase a student solution manual, it is recommended that you do not open it until AFTER you have attempted the question on your own!)In addition, there will be online homework assignments due every Monday (starting 5 Sept) at 11:55:00pm (NO late submissions accepted!). You either purchased a Lifetime access code previously (meaning you may continue to use WebAssign with this text at no additional charge), or you need to purchase a code (Lifetime or Semester) online. The URL for online homework is http://www.math.tamu.edu/courses/eHomework/. Only thehighest 20 homework section grades will be counted (about 14% of the total grade). Take-home Quizzes: Each Tuesday (except for Week 1 and exam weeks), you will receive a take-home quiz over the online homework sections completed the previous Monday. This quiz will be due at the beginning of class Thursday. Late quizzes may be turned in up to 5pm Friday for a 30% penalty. You may not receive help from anyone except me, but you may use notes and calculators. Only the highest 10 quiz grades will be counted; therefore, missed quizzes may not be made up.
